Looks like TOG was right...

  1. .... about cash machines.

Wandered to a cash machine yesterday to get some cash.
On the screen is a Microsoft error dialog box, mentioning
something about an illegal operation in some .dll file.

Did I put my card in? No bloody way.

"NT embedded" was used a lot at one time ISTR, sounds like it still is
in use, prolly now "XP embedded" though

Over the years, I've seen the NT 'Blue Screen Of Death' a
number of times on cash machines.

cash machines are one thing. This:

    http://www.acm.org/ubiquity/views/m_kabay_3.html

brings a whole new realm to the "blue screen of death".

    Summary:

"The Navy is going to use Windows 2000 for aircraft carriers.
My obsolete Windows 98 system is a bit unstable, therefore
    the aircraft carrier will crash."

    Hmm.

There's a Nwide one at our local corner shop. It regularly has an error
message on the screen. People still use it. Nothing untoward seems to
happen[1]; the word would soon get around if it did as most of the local
    residents are Cardiff Uni students.

[1] I used it once with a dll error showing on the screen

Don't say that. The company who provide the image processing / display
/ networking for that screen are doing an installation for me atm.
They use embedded linux gibbins so it wouldn't have been a MS BSOD.

The new 375/377 trains use Windows 95. We know this because the licences
are stuck to the cab wall when they're delivered.

Big problem with the new units?

Software conflicts and the continuing growth of sub-fleets. A v15 can't
couple to a v17.01 which can't couple to a v17.02. Or they do couple
then refuse to do anything, including uncouple.

One of the latest version's humorous foibles is it won't turn the air con
off via the UI, stuck to full cold. Cue notices from management
threatening all manner of disciplinary action if drivers continue to trip
the mcbs to turn it off....

Took several versions to address the comedy toilet alarms. This fault
had the potential to cause a major incident, I fucking kid you not. The
cure may have made things worse though. Either way, still not fixed....

    The joy...

    Quite often ...

Although my favourite was at London Victoria a bank of the older flipper
    departure boards serving 19 platforms.

One rush hour evening the whole lot, with a terrifying clickety noise,
    went to "CANCELLED".

The wave of hatred from the punters was palpable. Quickly followed by a
    panicky PA announcement ...
