I think you'll find that a lot of cave divers often carry 2 helmets
with them, one lightweight one giving little or no impact protection
for when they're actually in a sump and diving and one normal caving
helmet for when they're out of the water and moving between sumps.

In what way? I would imagine that organising a dive is seen as a less
everyday activity than riding a motorbike in a group and consequently if
things went wrong the organiser could be at risk.

However it's clear to me that you're happy with the "Professional and
Executive Motorcycle Club" so I'll leave it there.

Posh, eh? Sounds like they don't let the tradesmen ride with them. Cunts.

He's a merkin and they get confused by "cavern diving" and "cave
diving". In the former they just swim around in big open areas holding
a torch. In the latter they often die because they didn't realise it
was a cave and as such somewhere they shouldn't have been.

I still stand by my point though that there's no reason to wear a
helmet unless it's to mount lights on. I can't see any point in using
a helmet and not utilising it as somewhere to mount a light and thus
keep both hands free to either hold onto a guide line or smash bits
    off a wreck.

It was a jibe, yes, but not specifically at you. I do question what
sort of a **** would form a club with a name like that though.

Apart from being lighter and letting bubbles out (less to worry about)
the other big difference is the angle the lights are mounted at. A
normal caving helmet will have the light aimed a few feet in front of
the caver so the area he's moving in will be illuminated. A cave diver
will have his head at a different angle and will want to light up a
different area so the angle will be different, as will the type of
    lamp.

I don't cave dive or even cave these days but it was an enlightening
    experience when I did it.

I wouldn't use a helmet in a wreck, there's no need, so we agree on
that one. I used to have an air chisel run off a separate 2l pony
cylinder which also had a demand valve mounted on it for those days
when that little bit of extra came in handy. The air chisel was a toy
we came up with for splitting rocks and I can't actually claim to ever
having used it apart from somewhere I shouldn't have done and I'll not
admit in a public forum where that was.

Being something of a savage I'd use twin side mounted cylinders (as
used in caves) on a wreck dive because you can carry more air and
they're more streamlined and less likely to get snagged than a
traditional back mounted cylinder. It's much easier to just change
valves when they're mounted around your neck as per cave diving
techniques than to faff around with some of the crap I've seen wreck
    divers using.

Obviously re-breathers have changed a lot of the way things are done
these days but if I was still diving I think I'd be more inclined to
go with tri-mix than a re breather and use a small cylinder of normal
air for suit inflation to avoid the chill associated with mixed gas.

How far off topic has this gone?
