You're not angling for the True Froggie crown, are you?

Heh, I've always been shite at writing English. I try, but the rules of
apostrophes just beats me most of the time (apart from things like "its
    - belonging to" and "it's - it is"). Mind you, I can figure out split
    infinitives. Just.

  3. Generally the apostrophe replaces letters that have been left out.

So "it's" stands for "it is" but the space and second i have been left
    out.

I understand that bit, but what about possession and apostrophes?

The only time you don't use a possessive apostrophe is with 'its'.

They've been downgraded to a class 'C' punctuation mark, so as long as
you're only carrying enough for personal use, you'll be fine.

None of it. Comprehension, OTOH, I seem to be struggling with today.

And where, precisely, would it be possible with that word to stick an
apostrophe without it being absolutely blatantly wrong?

Are you sure you can't use an apostrophe with the words hers, ours,
    yours, or theirs?

Okay, I am watching the rest of this thread but there is another one I
    don't understand is:

"The coppers' son." (or should it be "The copper's son"?)

Believe me, I was really shite at English, at school. A certain member
of this Parish once corrected my CV and I was horrified at the amount
of mistakes I'd made (although the criticisms were very much welcome).
