(Andy Hewitt) came forth with the following in uk.rec.motorcycles The bloke at KTM told them that they wouldn't make it(ie no sponcership). They did. I bet someone at KTM was rapidly looking for a new job in the wake of the programme -- Mark ZX12R-B1 (Blue) CG125 (hers) Blata Ninja 3.4 BOTSWCAW#3
The book is like that as well. But if you look at it in terms of journey time then the time spent in America and Canada was bugger all. They may have gone a fair distance but they did it within a week or so. Compare that to the couple of months they took to cross Eastern Europe and you can see why they didn't feature it much. Plus the aim of the trip for Ewan and Charley was the crossing of Eastern Europe and Russia, not America, that was only done because they had to.
I think the insinuation was that KTM didn't think their bikes would make it and didn't want the negative publicity.
Bear was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever: Everybody in the factory who can tell one end of the spanner from the other one gets to work on the bikes, those who can't get a big rake to comb the sand for all the bits that vibrated off. Seriously, some of the KTM stories that one reads on drm and afm (ukrm's German and Austrian sister groups) make you wonder why people bother buying them at all...
