Claudio: describing the scene when he fell off and broke the Beemer's
    frame.

He's standing next to the little red russian bike.

Not only that, but who was riding the BMW at the Beinhaus, if Claudio
didn't pass his test until everyone was in Kiev?

If it'll give you something to moan about, on the back cover of the book
they are obviously travelling east to west rather than west to east.

    <secret stuff>

According to my mate who took his DAS with Claudio (and who filmed him
telephoning the office), he actually rode the whole trip regardless of
not having his UK license. He flew back briefly for his re-test from
    Prague, IIRC.

It's a bit naughty, so don't tell anyone..

    Why Claudio?
I don't know, they only had to contact me and I would have done it for
them on an expenses only basis. I've had all the jabs. I would've
brought my own camping gear, etc.
And made sure they got the paperwork right for borders.
And re-welded any bust frames, removing melt-able bits of brake system
    first.

I enjoyed the double DVD over Christmas.

    I want to visit Kazakhstan.

It was a failure to disconnect the battery before the welding
commenced, that caused the problem, aiui.

How exactly does welding - even arc welding - harm the battery?

I always thought it was a surefire way of isolating all electrics to
stop stray currents popping all the delicate stuff. I would be highly
surprised at the battery being damaged.
Also to the other point of the bearing damage, it would only occur if
one pole was on the opposide of the bearing, if that makes sense to
    you?

    same?

  14. I would agree but.
If you removed the battery I would short together the leads that
normally go to the battery to prevent stray voltage build up in the
live side of the cable form. The alternative to that would be leave the
    battery in circuit.

The most important thing being think hard about where you are welding
and what the earth clamp goes to.

DO NOT earth clam one side of the joint you are welding but clamp both
sides if there is any electrical cable forms that could be using the
structure as an earth return or are bonded to the parts you are welding.

With Claudio's bike I got the impression it wasn't electrical but
hydraulic as they said the brakes didn't work at all?
Oh Yes! Think hard about where the current can flow.

I've got a couple of mates in Tashkent and Karshi. I was going to go
up for New Year, but there are only two flights a week from Sharjah to
Tashkent, so I'd have to have taken some time off to do it. I'm going
to make it a work trip in Feburary, I think.

Well, the battery/welder theory came from their bloke at BMW in
London: he advised them to disconnect completely, and they didn't.
