I refuse to take the train unless the company pays for 1st class travel.

They don't like doing that, so I drive everywhere.

As long as you can book ahead the Quiet Coach is actually better than 1st,
where the air is filled with keyboard clacking and Essential Phonecalls.

Would you pay the extra for 1st class if it came out of your pocket?
I'm always curious when people insist on traveling 1st class whether
it's on a train or a flight because I wouldn't pay it if it was my
    money.
Then you run the risk of being caught on a grid locked motorway and
have to fight for parking. Your loss.

Whenever I'm working in London I flatly refuse to drive because of the
extra time (and hassle) involved in doing so. Ok, it's under an hour
for me to London but on the two or three times I've gone to our
offices in Kendal by train I just reserve a seat the day before then
sit down and chill out for the duration.

I tend to book first class on a cheap advanced deal if I'm paying out of
my own pocket. If I can't, then I will usually take the car.

On the busy routes it is usually booked out. By quiet people.

If they are not quiet, beyond the limits of my Bose headphones, I'm going to
make more noise. TBF this has only ever happened once.
Most of the people I see on the York route south are polite retired couples.

    It depends.
If you live around here and want to be in London by 9am you have 2 choices,
either pay first class or stand for 2 hours.

No, you don't. You have a choice - or two options.
    And there they are.

You weren't in the quiet coach I was in back from York the other week.
Every seat full, and the aisle as well. Same for the whole train.

Why do fuckers get on a train when they can see it's full? Just wait
    for the next one.

Using the bike from now onwards. Two weeks of train journeys to York
and back was enough for me.

Or reserve a standard seat on the internet and when you get on the
train to find someone sitting there you **** them off.

  18. Maybe because they want/need to get to where they're going and don't
want to stand around in a train station?
Well, I don't see what the problem is. Pre-booked seat,
book/laptop/whatever to distract me plus ipod and it doesn't really
    matter.

My attitude to trains has changed considerably over the last year and
I'd rather take a train than drive to London under any conditions.

I think Steve needs his head examined. But I don't expect to understand
    people or agree with them.

  19. You live somewhere in the SouthWest I think?

In which case that's complete and utter bollocks.

Book the ticket 24 hours in advance and you get seat reservations.
