    Well please explain why it reads the first post correctly, but
    replaces the pound sign with the n-tilde when reading dog's post.

    Now it may be that your newsreader displays both correctly, but it's
    quite clear that dog's is changing the character coding in some way
    too.

    well, i've changed my setup to completely ignore mime and not send any
    mime headers hopefully, so whatever i quote will just be the ascii
    payload of whatever anyone originally sent. that may or may not be a
    better experience for everyone.

    Ant's post used the ISO-8859-1, and QP encoding.
    Dog's port used UTF-8, and straight 8-bit text.

    Agent was happy with the former, but not the latter, and the subsequent
    posts from you and Champ used basic 7-bit ascii, which changed things
    irrevocably.
