Sorry to burst your bubble, but he wouldn't have got much from an
airship. Yes, they were made from aluminium (or duralumin), but they
didn't contain much. IIRC the all-up airframe weight of the Hindenburg
(biggest airship ever) was under 150 tonnes.

    <Googles>

Blimey. About 130 tonnes, including engines. 242 tonnes of lift from
the hydrogen, payload including fuel about 130 tonnes, so structure
weight about 130 tonnes. Including engines.

Sorry to burst yours but most of the wreckage ended up in a local plodde
shoppe, what he sold wasn't liberated from there. Oh no, it came form

  3. Yebbut, Steve's "salvage" was in inverted commas. Note the "any old
scraps", also. In a similar vein, the company that owns the Queen Mary in
Long Beach has [over the last 30 odd years] sold countless thousands of tons
of "genuine" souvenirs supposedly made from the ship's hallowed fabric,
which are in reality bits of old tat knocked out in the third world's
    sweatshops.

It seems that "genuine" is an adjective which is open to very ... er ...
f-l-e-x-i-b-l-e interpretation over there, as well ...

  6. Ah, well, fairy nuff then.

I thought you were saying he'd flogged a wrecked airship, which would
    have been a neat trick.

Bits of it got away, it was followed by a crowd of thousands as it came

What was the name of that saint with six heads? Anne?

She must have had six, cos they're all in cathedrals around Europe,
and all verified by the Vatican.

I'm not surprised: "Up past the Tower, wade through the Fleet, past the
plague pits and right at the fire damaged bakers" doesn't cut it in

I was in the cab of a train leaving Glasgow passing fields of heather

    steel works".
