Well, the Memsahib is usually a very demure young lady who doesn't usually
swear, but when on the tellybox news tonight it was announced that Londoners
will be required to pay a surcharge 'pon their council tax to pay for the
games facilities in the event that London wins the bidding she loudly
proclaimed: "then you can jolly well **** off!" - which is odd since I pay
the bill and not her, but there you go :)

Ah yes, I'd forgotten that the Olympic Games pre-date the Cold War... erm...
    Silly person.

There was a period from around 1896 - 1932 when the ideals of the
original Olympiad could have been said to have been embodied. The
proceedings were muddied by farcical organisation(!) and imperial
politics (in 1920 Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria were not
invited, neither was the Soviet Union).

It all ended with the great precursor to the cold war 1936, although 1932
first saw the rise of the fascist salute and 'superior being' idealogy.

For the second age of the modern Olympia 1948 onwards the political and
idealogical rot had well and truly set in.

The ideals themselves may have pre-dated the cold war, which began for
all intents and purposes in 1917, they haven't survived it.

B-b-b-b-but Mr Hog it *would* be cool, it'd be cooler than an iceberg taking
time out to chill in the coolness of the arctic night!
It might even beat ladies' beach volleyball in the battle for my attention
    :)

heh, but Queensland had Pauline Hanson so there's still plenty of room
    for improvement in NSW.

  10. But we were good at it and won medals!
And the rest of the world except us allow it.

Don't be a silly billy, there is 8 years to go before the London
Olympics. GWB and that nice Mr Blair will have killed them all long
before then and we will live in a new world where free men can sleep
peacefully in their beds at night.

You don't think that the premier event in the world is prestigious?
Every city hosting the games has this problem to a greater or lesser
extent. I've been to Sydney post games and it seems the public
transport is much better after the games than when I was there
    previous in the early 90s.

I was in Perth for the America's Cup defense and Fremantle was turned
from an arsehole to a jewel as a result. Sure, during the event it
was a bit more crowded tham normal, but after the event things were
    better.
    That's the spirit.

On the country issue, why doesn't UK compete in the football at the
    Olympics?

    [about shooting]
If shooters think it's a sport and it meets whatever rules to be
    accreditted, fine by me.

Jousting would liven up the imho dull equestrian events. Maybe
combine with the pistol shooting, archery, javelin and fencing for the
    final.

In fact in Melbourne 56 i seem to remember reading somewhere the
quarantine laws were so strict the equestrian events were held is some
other country, so they could have the smallarms in say, Bagdad.

It's weird what sports get into the Olympics. How syncronized
swimming got in is beyond me.

Do Japan? What about China? Korea?

FWIW I think it was bloody ridiculous legislation that outlawed handguns
in the hands of private owners. Again, a stupid response to an incident
that missed the point and was completely out of proportion. Of course,
the real reason for the legislation wasn't to 'fix' anything but was to
pander to the press and the 'Great British Public' in the hope of better
    election results.

It was Major's guvment that outlawed handguns wasn't it? If Blair and
co. then my arguments are the same.

  18. Major's guvment outlawed hand guns except those used in competition (
which Britain is very good at and wins medals)
Bliar's guvment outlawed the hand guns used in competitions.

Not at all, no. My opion of the cities that have hosted the olympic
remains unchanged by the fact. I'd like to go to most of those that I
    haven't visited.
That's nice. You think that London's transport systme will improve
    noticeably in 8 years?
    Cos we're crap at it?
