  3. That looks bollocks to me. The source seems to be 'abc news' - hardly
likely to be unbiased, is it? Anyway, you can't measure investment of
that magnitude over a short timespan - Sydney and Barcelona have to be
seen as succsses, becuase it improved tourism there (esp Barcelona,
which was barely on the tourist map before it had the games, and now
has all the bars, beach area, hotels etc that make up the olympic
village) and the tourism effect goes on for years if not decades.

But only if the games are good. Personally I see Athens fucking up our
bid, as poeple are reluctant to return to Europe after the cock-up
they;re about to make of it - but then loads of people were predicting
cock-ups at Sydney and they pulled it out of the bag big stylee at the
    last minute.

    Prestige for starters.

To buy yes - to rent, not really.

And AFAIU, the problem for a lot of homeless people is that they have no
fixed address, which means that banks and everyone else
refuse to deal with them because they are uncontactable.

  10. a] We're not going to get it
Actuarlllly you can, least in the way you've quoted. You've reduced a
prediction to a statement of fact. If "we're not going to get it", the
statement of fact wouldn't change. However your sentiments are
correct; either a) or g) must be untrue.

I'll just foxtrot-oscar to over *there*, shall I?

The Olympics is an out of date anachronism, a relic of the cold war. The
sooner it dies a drug related death the better.

  12. While it is illegal to possess fire arms for target skills in this
country we can't have the Olympics awarded to us.

They tried to get around that at the Commonwealth games with the
facilities at Bisley. It was a fiasco. The competitors said they would
not return to anything like it again.

    ie:
The police look after your specialised target weapons.
You must not put them in a locked up case because the police may want to
    inspect them.
You can only practice at specific times and for very short period
    because of the limited facilities.

The list of complaints was *very* long.

    *what* prestige?
Nah, I don't live in London any more. It just strikes me as a really
    stupid thing to do.

We can't even get the current population to work comfortable and with
any consistency. WTF is going to happen if we add god knows how many
hundred thousand spectators and competititors trying to get around
town (and I doubt they'll be using the tube somehow)

I have no faith that this country can actually host it and get it
    right either.

This may come as a surprise, I think the UK has the ability, people,
infrastructure and imagination to host the Olympics.

But the whole effort has moved away from extolling the excellence of the
athletes and the participating nations. It'll be nothing more than a
grubby show of corporate showboating and institutionalised greed.
Without an ounce of the underlying principles of the original Olympic
ethic, or to be frank, any fucking principles.

"Who's going to pay for me to make money".

It'll fail because those who have influence over how the majority think
want it to fail, because it suits their agenda.

If Atlanta made *any* money out of the Olympic Games, it was down to
the "free" new stadium for the Atlanta Braves, and the amount they
    made on bottled water.

I have never drunk so much water in one week, than I did then.

Still, it was stronger than their beer. :)

That's true; if there's a reasonable chance of getting the Olympics.

I don't think there is a reasonable chance though, we've pissed enough
people off over the recent years with our support for all things
    American...
    If we get them.

Who cares. It's a rediculously archaic sport anyway - might as well
    have jousting in the olympics

    That would be cool.

Can we have something where they put some Christians in an arena, with
    lions, too?
