London 2012 Olympic bid

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Cane, Jan 16, 2004.

  1. heh. TBH, I don't think we'll get it. And I think the
Daily Mail/Sun will rubbish it if we *do* get it, putting
the majority of the general public against it.

Anyway, what's ukrm for if not being awkward occasionally?

    Please, god.
It's a joke innit? Same as Picket's Lock was a joke. Rachel and I
heard that first announcement and just cracked up. I mean, surely
    they must have been joking?

The best bit is that on one hand they say that they can avoid the
transport problems by building everything close together, and then, on
the other hand, they can use all the top flight facilities in London.
Like Lords, Wimbledon, Wembley and the Dome.

I take it you're not paying your £20 then?

It's precisely the '£30m is **** all' attitude that screws everything up.
Look at the Dome - that only cost a 'few' million. This kind of money could
make a real contribution to something long lasting and beneficial to
London - not another hare brained scheme which they have no chance of
winning - you might as well spend all day ripping up £20 notes and flushing
    them down the khasi.

On the other hand my business is hotel and tour bookings in London so I
could potentially have a field day - but I still theinks it's a total waste
of time and money that should and could be better spent in other areas.

I've just had a trawl round bits of the WWW and I couldn't find
    anything conclusive.

    Here's one link:
    http://sport.guardian.co.uk/olympics/story/0,10308,1083166,00.html

Sydney, for example, in some reports was 100% over budget but being
dubbed "The best games ever" brought in an extra £2billion in extra
tourism. In other reports (see above link and also others that were
generally anti-Olympic bid sites) it said that Sydney made a loss of
    £1.2billion.

It also appears that Montreal made a big loss, Barcelona made a
small loss but got it back through tourism and Atlanta was held
up by US corporations paying in shed loads of $$$.

    £20 quid? What for?
If you think you could sort out the homeless problem in London for
£30m then you're more of an idiot than you're making yourself look
    here.

What's these references to Picket's Lock? I've googled, and it hasn't
turned up anything relevant (stuff about amateur radio etc).

We were going to bid for the World Athletics Championships in 2005
with a new stadium at Picketts Lock, NE London.
Aftert much debate and wrangling about the costs involved, the
    whole idea was scrapped.
