Only just heard (from the obituaries in today's Independent) that dear old
L.J.K. Setright, motorcycle and car journo extraordinaire, died on 7th
September. I used to enjoy his articles; they were almost precision
engineering in themselves even though he sounded a bit pompous sometimes.

he had a very interesting life, lived to a good age and left behind
    considerable goodwill. Excellent innings.

  4. Also in today's Guardian, and noted in uk.people.dead. I never
realised that he was Australian. Nor Jewish. That was a rare combination
where I grew up -- I thought Jews were characters in Shakespeare's plays
until I was about 17, when I knowingly met one for the first time[1].

[1] And, naturally, insulted him in my ignorance...

  7. I liked his "handlebars" column in Car magazine that even though I
consider four wheels rather excessive I bought the mag just for
that. When he wrote about cars I'd read that too. He was good enough to
    make even cars interesting :)

Thus spake Chris Malcolm unto the assembled multitudes:
I reckon he could write about any old subject and make it interesting.
