  2. If it does then the 3 machines running with (respectively) 64M,
128M and 192M at home are a pure illusion. As is the P2/64M machine
that is the ftp server here..

And as for the old machine I started with (486sx/25 with 32M RAM) -
    obviously that didn't exist either.

Linux runs quite happily on hardware that wouldn't meet the minimum
spec for NT4. Mind you - the more memory you throw at it the better -
but 128M RAM is fine for normal use.

For an old P133MMX with 40Mb what would be the best flavour then? Duty as a
home file&print server, FTP and perhaps small time webserver.

I've been running Debian for a couple of years on a similar spec (P166
w/64MB) doing the same tasks as yours, plus running an X server, so if you
leave off X and just do the bare minimum it will probably be adequate.
Unless you're talking about a laptop, there's undoubtedly lots of spare
memory for that vintage MB going begging, I'd upgrade to 64MB at least,
    if possible.

I am actually in the process of replacing the venerable P166 with a
    PIII-450 dual CPU with 256MB.

Laptop it is. Siemens Scenic 700! seems a shame to bin it.

  6. Any of the current ones - just don't bother installing the GUI bits

  7. I've been running a 486dx66 with 16Mb until last month. It runs Linux
well, especially with a late kernel, 2.4.18 made it very happy. It got
upgraded only because the upgrade process (apt-get upgrade) of the
software didn't work any more, it just ook too much memory, even after
    switching all the services off.

I've put the lowest spec new machine that I could build in its place, a
30 quid processor (1.4 Athlon) but splashed out a bit on 512Mb memory.
It is now doing nothing most of the time, eating my spam, filtering my
mail and serving a bit of web.

    Silly really.

Suse is about the only one I get on with[1] if you're looking at Linux.

[1] or can be bothered with as the rest involve tweaking this that and
the other files to get it working.

A lot of people have told me of suse but being a "poor ole country boy" as
far as this is concerned, I am so very gratefull for all opinions. The whole
of ukrmc have been so very helpful that it will take me a month to get
through all the suggestions. )A lot of which I do not understand but will
ask for advice as and when i need it (much to the concern of the "not mc
    link brigade" LIGAF!)
    Thank you one and all.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Phil Launchbury
Thereby rendering the system administration much more difficult for a
novice. Better to bin the old box unless you're experienced with Linux,
IMHO. You'll just end up lost and pissed off.

An old mate of mine used to say that in a Windows car, you'd click on
the left turn icon to turn left.

In a Unix car you'd type 'trafficator -l'

<sits back and awaits predictable 'but then it'd crash' response>

You'd also find the stering wheel you already own isn't supported, so
you'll have to buy a new one.

Yes but once you've done / learnt all that the car will never crash and
your life will be really easy [1].

[1] apart from swapping out various components for the new ones the
manufacturer send you on an almost daily basis.

with wittery prose along the lines of:

Oh, I'm sure you could botch one up from a newer car. Build it on the
newer car and install it in your own.

Mind you, every so often it would go wrong and cause you to crash, as
it'd find it's trying to control wheels from the newer car.

  20. I managed. When I started on Linux there was only
very rudimentary GUI (and you had to configure it all by hand -
    KDE/Gnome didn't exist).

I'm sure if I managed it then others can..

Besides which - to do the tasks he wanted (SMB, ftp and apache)
is not the hardest of things..
