BeOS - weird OS that runs without the need to repartition the drive.

    What specs?
If 350mhz+, with 256mb+ ram, then I'd say Mandrake 9.1, with KDE
desktop. Its a dead easy install-around 25 minutes start to finish, and
quite idiot proof (even I got it working in half an hour).A better spec
comp would be OK with Mandrake 9.2. If you get the 3 complete install
discs (or download them - 650mb ish each), then you'll have almost every
application that you'll ever need, though there are virtually no games
available apart from 2D efforts that went out with the Sinclair Spectrum.
There are bootable OSes available just to give you an idea if your
hardware will be supported - most of it is, with the main trouble areas
    being adsl modems and Winmodems.
Get hold of a couple of Linux mags, who usually have various OSes on their
    cover discs.

RH8 is ancient. Even 9 is miles behind distros like Mandrake who like to
be bleeding edge. As for not enough mileage on Fedora it was a straight
code branch from RH9 so it has just as much 'mileage' as RH9 if not more
due to the influx of developers into the 'new exciting' branch.
If you don't have >128M RAM look at IceWM as a window manager.
I personally use Suse 9.0 Pro and have updated the kernel to 2.6.1. It is
as stable as I have ever known.
You can decide to use any Window manager with any distro. I like Gnome as
well although I also use IceWM on a low spec machine. The whole point of
things like Linux is that the choice is up to you. Try a few and see what
works however your brain is wired.

    Linux requires 256mb?!!!

If so, I will stick to my Windows 2000 installation that's quite happy with
128 on a shite old PC.

Dunno, but FreeBSD used to run just fine in 8Mb on my old 486... and it'd
out multitask my 32Mb P166 Win95 machine at the time.

That's what I thought - hence my reaciton to a post indicating 256mb was
    'required'.

Surely, it not being MS and all, you can just upgrade all your 8
    installations to 10 FOC?

No, it is still quite possible to run a server on a 386 with little ram.
Newer versions have support for just about everything, so, just like any
other OS,if it does more, it benefits from more ram.The current Distros
are,IMO, vastly superior to any Windows version (with the exception of
games support), with the added bonus that virtually all apps are free.
There is still a problem of lack of 'Graphic User Interface' at some
times, like when installing an app from a download (you need to type the
commands into a console), but overall, it is quite easily learnt, and the
use of Consoles and Command lines is limited to a few occasions.

  17. i've just rebooted mine after adding a new NIC. The hard disks said they
needed checking as they had not been checked for 289 days, RH8.
