I know not the reasons why, so "wibble".
Actually, that's exactly what it does do, unless I'm misunderstanding
what you mean. The 'outside' face of the wheel centre is roughly level
with the right-hand edge of the rim, & the spokes curl inwards to
connect to the centre of the rim, iyswim. sort of like a car wheel I
    s'pose.

Oh right, yeah, I guess you could do this on a cast wheel. I was more
thinking of the bicycle ones, where the spokes must form a V shape
from hub to rim, albeit slightly distorted, to hold the wheel
    together.

....and not just on linked brakes.

A car wheel is rigid; on a spoked wheel it's only the tension in the
spokes, pulling on opposite sides of the hub, that holds it together.

    uhuh, that was my understanding.
Absolutely. But I dragged the rear sometimes too into tight bends.

For max/emergency/panic braking, both are needed, and i've locked the
front up on hard braking with both lever and pedal. This was preferable
to T boning a stealth White van man whilst commuting in Lunnon once.

The only other major brakefest was in France on the way back to the
ferry. Gave it maximum on the lever as I didn't have time to get to the
pedal. I was too busy taking to the gravel and grass to ride around Tim
    (the only escape route)

I like the CBS. It's a personal thang.

    Cheers,

    Paul.
