Limiting motorcycle exhaust noise to 75db

While watching Hamster Man on Top Gear he mentioned that there is
legistation going through to limit the noise that a motorcycle exhaust
can make to 75db, which doesn't sound loud to me.

Does anyone have any more information on this?

Suggests that it's currently 74db for cars, and 86(?) for bikes, so I
    suppose it's not *that* surprising.

However, I only caught part of it as I was distracted by applauding Mr.
May on his comments about Triumph's three cylinder engines.

I bet that they really want to limit power, and limiting noise is as
    good as?

BGN was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
    It won't be.

    <looks at Ducati>

Fortunately they'll have a hard time applying it retrospectively.

  9. Riding back from work last Friday I ended up behind some sort of Kawaski 125
race rep thing. It was tiny but was being ridden by a rather large bloke -
it looked comical but paled compared to the noise this thing made. It
drowned out my ZX10 and actually made my ears hurt when directly behind the
can. I had no idea a 125 could be so loud. It must have been the bike
equivalent of shouting "get it off me, GET IT OFF ME".

If your pipe says "not for road use" or something similar, but you get it
    checked and its under 75db
if this became law, would your pipe become legal? or is it an emmissions
    thing too ?
Plus, how do we go about checking the noise level ?

_If_ it becomes law, then it would be on new bikes only, and it would
effectively mean that any after-market exhaust would have to be
certified per model to be legal. how it would be enforced, except by
insisting on OEM replacements, I don't know.

Either that or patterns designed to meet the requirements and a stated
    fitment list.

Why? Wouldn't it make more sense to kill those who ride through Cotswold
villages at high 4 cylinder revs with 'fruity' race pipes given they've
    probably provoked this reaction?

Yes, I know this a pot kettle thing ATM. I really have to do something
about the 'silencers' on my bike.

I once owned an XJ900 with a Marshal Cone exhaust. Road legal, but if
you revved it in a carpark, all the car alarms went off. I used to
smile and tell people that it scared the cages.

    ;)
