    In
I ask cos as I was slowing approaching the tolls yesterday, and was
occupied with watching the other vehicles lane swapping etc I noticed a
plod arrive alive van on a bridge above the tolls...

I found a site on the web that said the limit was 40 on the bridge (and
if so I was over that) ... but everyone seemed to be flowing at "normal"
    motorway speeds ...

May have missed them but I can honestly say I did'nt see any signs
indicating a reduction from NSL in force ..

It's 70 on new and old; except when windy when it's 40 on the old bridge and
    single lane.

Sounds like these limits are for the old severn bridge. Unless indicated the
limit is 70 as I have passed plod at 70-75 and got away with it so far.

FFS! Are we on the receiving end of a visit from Top Posters Anonymous
    or something?

Look, go and read the FFAQ at www.ukrm.net, pay particular attention to
the bit about not top posting and snipping .sigs.

This has been a Polite Suggestion.

Nah, you're thinking of Oop Norf, where it's Forthy-Fife.

The van was probably monitoring traffic on the other carriageway which
does not have tolls. Nice little leaving present for those exiting
    Wales.

AFAIK the new bridge is subject to normal motorway regs. The old bridge
had special regs because of the effects of hazardous weather and the
    lack of a hard shoulder.

40 on the old one. 70 on the new one.
Well that's what I've always done and I go up about once a month.

There used to be big FOAD signs that flashed telling you if you were
breaking the limit. Great fun that was.

Last time I went over it, I'm sure it was 70. If not, oops indeed.
Time and inclination permitting, I may use that one tomorrow.

For a very long time they had single lanes on both sides as the bridge
was structurally unsound - chocolate overhead cables IIRC. There was a
    38T weight limit too.

They decided to let traffic continue to cross the bridge but at a
reduced flow rate. Hence 40mph & single lanes.

They've allegedly replaced the dodgy cables and all lanes are open at
70mph - or they were last time I used the old bridge. I think the weight
    limit remains.
