Planet Rock (a digital radio station) are nicely amusing me ce soir...
currently playing Silver Machine by Hawkwind.
Yay, maybe it's because I'm as pissed as a pissed thing (feck sake the
number of backspace depresses and the amount of squinting at the screen is
embaressing) but I quite like that actually.

So there, and up yer bum if you don't agree :)

Yep, I got a DAB for chrimbo, thought Planet Rock was great for the first
2 days, then they just keep playing the same songs every day.How many
times can you hear Saxons 'Wheels of steel' without getting sick of it -
perhaps once a week is enough, but 9 times a week is too much. Its not like
they are limited in their choice, they could play anything rock related
from 1965-1990 ish, yet its the same over and over.
I then tried 'The Storm' ('Modern' rock), which are even worse, playing
the same thing 3 or 4 times a day.
On a different note, how do these stations get any income?
They rarely have adverts on, so there'll be little income there.
'The Storm' could be paid for playing the music, as it is so repetitive.
Who'd pay Planet Rock for playing 20 yo songs?
    Alan.

Yeah, you're not wrong. Which is probably why we don't listen to Planet Rock
more than twice per week or so, prefering Radio 4 the rest of the time.

    If you like 'classic' rock, then you can listen online to Dutch station;
    "Arrow Classic Rock" at www.arrow.nl.
Click on the little yellow triangle icon at the top of the page, the one
    with the speaker in.
It also gets repetitive after a while but the evening stuff is quite good.

Mine arrives tomorrow. Look for the for sale notice soon if the
    signal strength is not up to it :}

Hopefully it'll be fine. And unlike digital telly (we've got a free to view
digibox too) I see (hear? <g>) the point. For the most part digital telly
doesn't deliver better picture quality, except maybe for Channel 5 (and who
watches that anyway?), infact I'd say that the picture quality of digital
telly was worse than that from the analogue signal (both are pretty good
hereabouts though). But the sound quality of digital radio blows analogue
radio out of the water, it's brilliant, a really worthwhile investment of
£90 for a DAB radio IMO (especially since herself paid for it and not me
    <g>).

This must be a function of the signal strength at your location as it
is certainly not true as a rule. Or perhaps you're just blind.
Now just a cotton pickin' minute.. I've been impressed by the way 5
have picked themselves up by the bootstraps and scheduled some good
films and shows recently. They've a way to go, sure, but much improved
on where they were a year ago.
    Now that's a cool trick.

You'd be surprised at the strength of feeling a simple comment like
that can make in the 'higher end' hi-fi world. It is generally
accepted that a *good* (ie £750+) analogue tuner with a decent roof
mounted aerial will sound much better than DAB due to the constantly
droppping bit rates. OTOH I am using it for background only, and
don't want to spend the kind of money needed for a Cyrus tuner and
aerial ATM. Plus, you get more stations on DAB :)

The best radio quality is on Sky channels 851-4.

I have no idea that they had a digitial feed to the transmitter. Like
I said, I'm not really bothered.
    Yes, quite possibly

I don't think it's anything to do with the signal strength, and since I am
using neither an extremely large font nor a tactile reader I wouldn't appear
to be blind. Simply put when viewing digital telly we sometimes see a little
fuzzy horizontal line right at the very outside edge of the viewing window,
it starts on the bottom far left hand side and extends maybe 1/3 of the way
across the screen. Then on other occassions we get faint colour band
vertical ghosting drifting from left to right across the whole screen
(sorry, don't know how else to describe it). Neither happen all the time. I
suspect it's either the electronic shielding in the digibox that isn't quite
up to scratch (though I've separated the digibox from all other electronic
equipment by as far as I can, mebbe 18") or the 5 into 1 scart adaptor
thingy is a bit dodgy (even when I do make sure that both the VCR and the
DVD player are off when we're watching digi we still get the problems
mentioned). These problems are not so bad really, it doesn't freak me but
the missus doesn't get on with the occassional colour band drifting stuff
    very well at all.

If anyone knows how to cure these probs without lobbing the whole lot away
and starting again then I'd be grateful to read about it!
    Um mebbe... wouldn't know, don't watch Channel 5 :)
Isn't it just... now onto the next stage of the plan: The Mortgage :)

I've met some of these people IRL, as much as they have an RL that is and oi
vey are they a bit odd or what?
Putting several thousands, in some cases tens of thousands of pounds worth
of AV kit into a domestic lounge... can't see the point myself. Then some of
them build special rooms to put the kit in, ho well, it's their life and not
mine. But being asked to listen to the improvement in sound quality between
a Duo Shielded Cross Matched Hokey Cokey 2000 BiWiring 4mm 7.8ohm cable and
a Tri Shielded Simplex Matched Hokey Cokey 3000 BiWiring 5mm 8.4ohm cable is
enough to have me wanting to slash my wrists ;-p

cough. *I* can, but not til it gets silly :) It is entirely possible
to spend too much time fettling, and not enough time listening.

    [picture interference]
5 into 1 adaptor? FFS, that'll be causing your problems. Easy way to
find out though, innit. Unplug your digibox from it and plug it
straight into your TV - then appreciate the huge improvement you've
    just made for free.

The permanent solution is a little harder - buying a non-pikey TV
    equipped with sufficient Scart sockets.

All of these are analogue interference effects which mean they're being
introduced by whatever conducted or induced means between the output of
the decoder circuits in the digibox and the telly. Your common or
garden digital interference is blockiness, picture freezes and choppy
    audio.
Doh! Nice quality one is it? ?14.99 from Tandy? Lovely. So you're
happy to dismiss digital TV as not delivering better picture quality
but you've wired it through some dodgy POS adaptor. OK.
Get a decent quality fully wired scart and set your digibox and telly
up to RGB or component (YUV). Sit back, enjoy and ponder the snow,
ghosting and general shit that were often seen on analogue terrestrial
TV whenever it rained a bit or a big bus drove past.

Well mine doesn't suffer any of those particular problems. Plus anyway it's
a goodly way away from sources of interferece, I'd hope that 18" was far
    enough no?
Yeah that's the one, except that it came from Dixons.
That's pretty much it, except that I don't entirely dismiss digital telly,
it's handy for Sky News, BBC3, and whatever. But you know, if I buy a
regular plug and attach it to a leccy cable it works, if I buy a lightbulb
it works, if I buy a DVD player it works, etc. So not being the Ubergruppen
DomesticElectronics Fuhrer that you clearly are I commited the cardinal sin
of purchasing what appeared to be an appropriate tool for the job at hand
Please define "quality" scart multiway adaptor (preferably with the name of
a High Street vendor of said). Thanks.
Don't usually get any big buses driving past my place.

Any idea how to find out what they're playing? It's great not having
some slack jawed yokel of a presenter interrupting and talking over
the music but it would be nice to know what some of the tracks are.
