    Today's been a bummer...

Riding to work I cross the Tay bridge and all was quiet.. I was
passing the Tayport Dundee bus, checked there was nothing behind,
indicated, moved, over took bus and was just about to move back into
inside lane when I did a check over my left shoulder (having started
to move) when I see a Boxter on my inside moving like the clappers...
so no movement and just thanking my stars I did the head check...

I know it's clear I had not used my mirrors enough on the overtake but
most of the time we tend not to get boys moving at +70 on the TB...

so feeling lucky and kicking myself for not checking mirrors better...

Work: boy works with us fell off side of mountain, coma, dies of
    injuries... place is a mess.

24 yrs old and just a Top Lad.

    Feeling sad.

    Sorry

    Aj

Talking of life savers, I was in the car yesterday and just about to make a
right turn off of a fast single carriageway, having already done the mirror
signal bit I was just about rolling forward to check that the very narrow
road I was entering into was clear.

Anyway I had another good look around me before finally making the turn, I
then saw a motorbike coming up behind me at one hell of a lick and there was
no way he was going to stop, so I had two choices make the turn real quick
or stay put. I assumed he had not seem my indicator and was overtaking
rather than he'd not seen me at all, so I stayed put and overtook real
    quick.

I was so relieved I made the right decision.

Best not to do anything until they've passed. I had cars 'helpfully'
moving over for me when I was on the M1. TBH, it's easier to pass a
target that's not manouvring in unexpected directions.

    Cheers,

    Paul.

  6. My boss was killed in this scenario last year.

He was overtaking a queue of traffic along the Nettlebed - Henley road and a
white van turned right in front of him from the head of the queue.

I dunno. "Away from me" is alway a good direction. I quite like it,
when they do that over here.

Sorry to say this, but it was his fault wasn't it? He created an
additional lane and to have been killed, must have been going at a fair
    pace.

I've come a cropper like this many moons ago, but I wasn't going fast
enough to cause any damage to me. The bike was okay-ish, but had a dent
in the rim of the wheel (K75) where I hit the wing of the cage turning.
I also fucked the forks, but not enough to cause major grief when
riding slowly. I didn't care though, as it was a Courier Systems bike
and I fucked off pretty shortly after.

Luckily enough, the driver never claimed on his insurance, as I found
out that I would have been mostly responsible.

I think you need to rephrase that.
You can start with "My boss killed himself...."

In my particular case there was no other traffic, and a massive gap up my
inside, I think he must have not seen my indicator or noticed my road
postion (close to white line), or being it was such a small road I was
turning into he just may not have been expecting anyone to turn right at
    that point.

Sorry to hear about you boss, David

Dude, I think I heard about this. My friend is from Perth, her brother
was best pals with a guy that died yesterday (maybe Tuesday) in the
    same manner. Truly sad.

  12. you beat me to it - filtering past a junction/turning is more than a
    little suicidal.

It's perfectly safe as long as there is sufficient on-coming traffic.

  14. Yeah, it was his own stupid fault - agreed totally.
We all do some stupid shit, most of time you manage to get away with it,
    sometimes you don't.

  15. ^^^^^
    Mostly

Except if you have some nutter who either thinks

    a) "I can get through that gap, quickly, I can" because they're
    impatient
    or
    b) "I can probably get through that gap, and no-one wants to run into
this shitty old transit/landy anyway, so I'm sure they'll stop".

I didn't say "lots of on-coming traffic" I said "sufficient". By
(admitedly circular) definition, if there's sufficient on-coming
traffic to be safe then it's safe.

I'm specifically thinking about London traffic where cars in both
directions are mostly completely stopped or moving along very slowly -
I've filtered past thousands of junctions and never had a problem.

I've been knocked off a couple of times, but never by a vehicle trying
to turn right into a junction.

  18. you're right in this type of situation, although erring on cautious is
still a smart thing. I was thinking more along the lines of the road
and speeds mentioned by the chappy a few posts up.

That particular road is pretty good but visibility isn't great, lots of
blind bends and hidden turnings - I'd certainly be extremely cautious
    filtering slow moving/stopped traffic.

  19. No worries, the UKRM climbers will be out again soon, I'm sure someone
could be persauded to fiddle with their equipment and/or push them off
    the nearest mountian.

If it is any help, I was heading north on the A4010 Wycombe Road and
turning right into Little Lane for those that know it.
