Lidl and Public Transport

  1. I like Waitrose but I'd be the first to accept it is expensive compared
    to the other supermarkets.

The reasons I like Waitrose are :-

    a) generally a good selection of produce including more ranges of
unusual or specialist varieties. They stocked some excellent English
varieties of apple when in season. Similar comments for things like
fish, meat and cheese. Quality overall is good.

    b) Their own brand stuff is pretty decent. In own brand comparisons for
the same product Waitrose very often comes out best.

    c) they have an innovative approach to some of their "stick in a
microwave" ranges. Their Indian stuff is good. I'm less enamoured of
their Chinese or Thai stuff. That's more because I am spoilt by having
Chinatown across the road from work and I can cook a passable Chinese
    meal.

    d) I like their bakery products. I have yet to find any supermarket that
gets anywhere near them. The nearest alternative are expensive French or
German bakeries and I don't have any of those in my local area
    (thankfully!).

    e) Even with my most cynical hat on I think Waitrose are probably better
behaved in terms of dealing with their suppliers and "ethical"
production methods. I doubt the difference is very much but I do
struggle with the economic power that Tesco can wield.

    f) The shops are generally reasonably spacious and you don't get trolley
jams or pillars in the middle of aisles.

    g) Queues at checkouts are a rare occurrence which is a nice change from
    many supermarkets.

    h) Some of the customers and staff are well worth ogling.

I don't buy beer, wines or spirits but Waitrose have an excellent range.
Their stuff is frequently highly rated on shows like Great Food Live.

You get what you pay for and I don't mind paying a bit extra for better
food and a better shopping experience. If I was on the dole or not well
paid I wouldn't be shopping at Waitrose though!

They also treat their suppliers ethically. Tesco and Asda have a 90 day plus
payment policy. John Lewis and Waitrose have a 16 day payment policy and are
very careful about standards. I like them for this. I shop Lidl, Waitrose
and small local shops whenever I can.

Given that the food dept at M&S has consistently grown over the last several
years, compared to the stagnating clothes section, I know which dept I'd
rather be running at M&S if I was still there.

Plus it's a hell of a lot easier to find and hire clothes sales staff,
whereas a *good* foods manager will have a lot broader skill set, and a
fuckload more experience of problem solving. It was always my observation
that the textiles managers would mill around like lost sheep if they had to
cover a foods shift, whereas when the situation was reversed, the foods
managers would just get the shit done and be thankful for an easy
    afternoon... :)

Our Christmas pudding for 2005 came from Lidl - it was very good.

Their fish counter has the freshest supermarket fish ever and they
stock undyed smoked cod and haddock (the dyes kepe me awake). For meat
they have a good selection of free range beef, pork and poultry (I'm
sure it tastes better). The cheese counter has more choice than many a
specialist cheese store. I'm a fan.
I don't rate their Indian - not enough flavours or heat, but then I
can cook Indian pretty well myself.
    Seconded.

We are very low paid, but I do Lidl's on the way to Waitrose and get
what I can there (all my cleaning products for a start, and lots of
fruit and veg for which they are actually both very good and very
cheap), so I get the best of both worlds.

You seem to have confused a request for sanity with censorship. Perhaps
you'd be better off crying 'netkkkop, netkkkop, netkkkop' ?

Shouldn't, if we're being fair, you say something similar to BGN as he
most certainly seemed to "go off on one" in the original and I don't
think anything in Paul's reply was excessively sanctiminious.

Or are you trying to up the Sanc Twat count yourself?

  12. Oi! I like those odd varieties of canned fish :-#

Seriously they are worth a try. The Mackerel is great and best tinned
    Buckling going.

    And the Black Forest Ham.

    And the traditional potato salad.
