When the cunts who break into houses claim compensation against the owners
of the houses when they cut themselves during the act of breaking in and
win, I'd say anything is possible.

A brick and a litre of petrol would make a good substitute. A fire inside a
    car generally fucks it up.

But the **** will have insurance, won't he?

Would you care to quote an example? Daily Mail stories not counting,
    of course.

And whilst it may not be referrable and it is certainly anecdotal, this
isn't apocryphal: a mate of mine, a mechanic by trade, realised there
was money to be made in a clean-handed way by selling parts, so he
opened a motor parts shop. Within a month, the rear door was forced in
the middle of the night and a load of tools disappeared into the night.
We rebuilt the door and frame with heavy use of steel plate and angle
iron, reinforced hinges and big bolts.

Three weeks later, they came back and entered through the roof, of all
places. The roof took some specialist repair work as a lot of slates
had been damaged, as had several roof timbers. Remedial reinforcemnt
took place as soon as the builders had left, stringing barbed wire
across the underside of the roofing felt, and a clever little fella
came in to string several wires around, connected to the
    newly-installed alarm system.

Three weeks later, there was another hole in the roof, another load of
gear taken and the alarm was ringing its head off at 3am to little
effect due to the accompanying thunderstorm. It was all rebuilt again,
and my man "stored" a load of 6" square boards with nails knocked
halfway through them and the heads snipped off all through the loft
    space.

The next time the alarm went off, there was a burglar trapped in the
loft with a foot full of nails preventing his escape. A claim for
injury followed, which he won. He was prosecuted for trespass (as
there was no proof he'd actually stolen anything, nor that he'd
actually broken in) so he ended up well in front on that one too.

My friend went back to spannering: older, wiser and poorer.

But it's really very different from the suggestion that a burglar
could sue for acccidental damage. It's clear from what you say that
your mate had deliberately set said nails out in a fashion designed
solely to cause injury to a trespasser. Whether you feel it was
justified or not is beside the point, although clearly the court he
was sued at did not, but it's all down to a question of the intent,
which in this case is obvious.
He was lucky he didn't get banged up for GBH, TBH.

There is a famous case of a burglar breaking into a garage through the
roof, & getting stuck in there for a few days as the door was
dead-locked & the owners were away. He sued them & won. I think that
was in the US though, so may not be relevant to this thread (dunno if
    you're after UK only examples).

    Tony Martin, right?

Look, it's pretty clear here - UK law doesn't allow you to shoot
someone who you think is breaking in. If you do, you're breaking the
law, and will be held responsible for the consequences.

I'm frankly amazed that quite a few folks here have posted examples of
deliberate injury being caused as if they support the statement Beav
    gave up there^^, which was

"When the cunts who break into houses claim compensation against the
owners of the houses when they cut themselves during the act of
breaking in and win, I'd say anything is possible."

Non of the examples posted are in any way similar.

I had a quick look and there really does seem to be nothing similar out
there. One 'sort of' similar in the states where a high school kid
(IIRC) fell through the roof while stealing floodlights, but that's
about as close as I could find.
