Has anyone watched the recent documentary on how the Humboldt Squid has
evolved and is pretty much becoming the top predator in the Pacific. It
rocked me back in my seat, how their physiology has developed, how they are
communicating and how pack hunting has developed. It's Darwin in action and
seems to have happened rather quickly.

Never mind throwing religious recidivists to the lions, throw them to
    Darwin's squids.

Quite a few keen scuba divers in this NG, sheesh one would think twice about
getting into neoprene off the CA coast at certain times of year. That blend
of ferocity, intelligence, cunning, camouflage and numbers is somewhat
intimidating. I found myself rather hoping the camera would cut left to an
Orca cutting a flesh eating swage through the swarm but no such luck.

If you haven't seen it yet it is worth hunting down Nature Shock: Killer
    Squid and consuming.

  3. I watched it and my mind boggled. Still, we do have the ultimate weapon
    - the deep fat fryer.

hmmm. So squid thrive in oxygen deprived water, eh? This showed up in
    my newsrag yesterday:

Dunno if the articles are related in any way, but we've seen a fair
number of squid recently. No reports of any attacks on divers that I
know of. There are commercial boats here that go after them. They sit
just offshore with big booms that hold high-powered lamps that light
    the water and attract squid.

I don't scuba, but I spend more time than most in the ocean. Last year
a bunch of squid washed up at my local beach. I took the opportunity
to check them out "up close and personal" as they say. Amazing
critters. Like octopus, they are capable of changing skin color and
texture _instantly._ They will flash from silky smooth white to bumpy
red-brown in a fraction of a second. They can create patterns of
dotted circles (~1/4" in diameter) or amorphous blotches over their
    whole bodies.
Just more proof that God did psychedelics.

I was wondering if they were edible

staple food of the sperm whale, apparently. The whales can dive down to 2km
    to hunt the fuckers.

I doubt it - they're still squid, after all.
