Lemmiwinks; live and livid in Canberra hospital

    Hi;

Turns out that Lemmiwinks fall on Saturday cost him his right shoulder
and right hip. He had surgery yesterday involving several large pins
in both joints and is now recovering in Canberra hospital, Woden.
He's not been allowed out of bed yet. At this stage it looks like
he'll be there for a couple more days, but he's not getting a
consensus from the various surgeons involved.

He's up for three non-load-bearing months; basically even in a couple
of months when he can put weight on his leg he won't be able to walk,
and with the shoulder out too he won't be able to use crutches. When
he gets home he'll be house-bound for some time.

He's in ward 9B, doesn't have a phone, and has to keep his mobile
turned off. He's quickly running out things to do so he'd definitely
be up for visits from locals and any news from anywhere.

You might be able to sms him; Ms L takes his phone out and checks it
occasionally, or if you want to send him a message post here and I'll
    get it through to him.

I don't think anything was posted, we just got a message from him at
the Unaugural that he wouldn't be able to make it. Apparently a
random unco moment on his bicycle had him misjudging the handlebars
    and losing balance.

  5. Ouch, that's quite a bit of damage for a bicycle. My first assumption
    was a prang to/from Unaugural.

    Holy crap, poor Lemmiwinks!

I'd go and visit if I was mobile - I'm off the bike for at least another
week, with my busted arse. See, ppl reckon motorbikes are dangerous. I
reckon pushies and wheelchairs are far worse!!!!

Love to Lemmiwinks - I'm contemplating hiring a car for a few days - if I
can get one I'll drop in for a visit!

    Cycling is a dangerous sport.
If he were wearing motorcycling gear how would he have fared?

Hard to say, the extra weight would increase the force of impact,
Remarkably, no skin damage in the fall. Some impressive scars on the
way from the surgery though, and the 10cm bolts are airport security
    tedium for life.

Very likely no differently. The injuries are broken bones and
buggered joints, most motorcycle kit won't protect you from those
    either.

Some armour can lessen the impact to joints, it is barely possible
that he might not have broken them so badly, but that depends a lot on
    the exact injuries.

  14. So - buy a titanium knife and hijack a plane?

    Surely there's something amiss here?

I can second that. The Alfoil in my hat doesn't trip it either...

And tell him this mentally deranged loony sends his best wishes too.

  16. Yet my studded belt got me into heaps of trouble at Stanstead a year
ago. Yeah - OK I was hungover still from Australia and a night out in
Soho. To the point where I had forgotten I had a nearly empty bottle
of Coke in my backpack and was wearing a studded belt. Thank god the
security guy had a sense of humour because as I'm firing off their
metal detectors, there's a bag coming though XRay and some is saying
"who's bag is this?". Metal detector is going bling! and I have to
sheepishly admit the backpack is mine too.

I blame this cute blonde the two days and nights before I left
    Leunceston, OK?

I'm amazed I didn't end up strip searched, to be quite honest. They
    are paranoid over there.

I don't set off the walk-through detector but the metal in my back set off a
    hand-held scanner once.

Saw Lemmiwinks and Ms L briefly today - in good spirits, but
understandably dreading three months of immobility. He has some very
colourful bruises! I promised not to go near his wheelchair when he
    gets it.

Gee he's got great views from the 9th floor of the hospital!
