Nev, the Rego labels in WA used to have the expiry date and the plate number
on that but they stopped that over 15 years ago. So the rego labels we had
just said "WA, the month, and year", totally meaningless crap really. You
could lift a current sticker from your granny's unused Morry Minor and put
it on your Commodore when it expired.

    Go to https://online.transport.wa.gov.au/webExternal/registration/
type in GUZZI94 and it will give you the expiry date as 22/10/2011.
I agree it doesn't tell you if this plate belongs to the vehicle you're
looking at though. But then, what does?

Never said I would win but still would take it to court

My line of dialogue would go something like this

" In WA you dont need labels and SA is bringing that in as well < then I
would ramble on about instant checks now available to officers and that
he would have used it anyway etc etc >. I have a rego label and its in a
very prominent place and the officer could see it and why the officer
decided to book me on something so minor if it is in fact illegal is
truly amazing. Finally I would say that I didnt put the label on, it was
like that when I purchased the bike brand new "

well something like that plus some grovelling and apoligizing to the
magistarte for wasting his important time

maybe I will be lucky and only get 6 months in gaol for that :)

In Queensland it's make, model, year, colour, VIN, and expiry date.
Oh, and thanks, reminded me to put the new sticker on the trumpy.

    Waste of time and money.

    THe legislation in NSW says

ROAD TRANSPORT (VEHICLE REGISTRATION ) REGULATION 2007 - REG 16
    (3) A registration label must be affixed:
    (a) in the case of a motor vehicle fitted with a windscreen or fixed
    windows:
    (i) to the lower left (or near side) portion of the front windscreen,
    or
(ii) to any fixed window on the left (or near) side of the vehicle,
    and
    (b) in the case of a caravan or other trailer:
    (i) on or adjacent to the vehicle’s number-plate in such a manner that
the characters on the number-plate are not obscured, or
(ii) if the vehicle has a fixed rear window or a hinged rear window
that is to be closed when the caravan or other trailer is being
towed-to that window, in a location as close as possible to the
    vehicle’s number-plate, and
    (c) in any other case-on or adjacent to the vehicle’s rear
number-plate in such a manner that the characters on the number-plate
    are not obscured.
    (4) Despite subclause (3), the registration label must be affixed so
that the information on the label is readable from the outside of
    the vehicle.

So what is at issue is is does the label obscure the characters on the
plate and is the information on the label readable.

The info on my label is readable, although for some of it you have to
grovel on the ground. There is nothing in the legislation that says
it must be readable if you are standing up, or that you don't ahve to
    bend down.

So the questions to ask are things like "Was all of the information
visible? Which parts were not? " And hold up a tube holder showing
that it is in fact possible to see all parts of hte label when the
tube holder is in place on the bike.

Then you ask the cop how tall they are, and ask if the label was 6"
above the ground but in a square holder, would they have to grovel to
see that? If so, would that be illegal?

This is the Alice method of beating tickets...

The holder on the Hack Guzzi came off so I just had the label in the
    tank bag.

I got rear-ended, went into the nearest copshop to report same, they
asked me the bike's rego, gave it, not on the computer!

I produced the rego label, they looked at it, looked at the computer,
    shrugged....

I know that George. I bought a car in Vic last year, and drove it back. It
now no longer has a rego sticker. When I looked at the Vic sticker my first
thought was "What a pedantic lot of useless crap they put on here".

I remember seeing this discussion on another forum

on the back of qld rego papers it states that a rego tube is not a
    suitable holder

Do Qld have different regs to NSW that actually forbid things that
aren't flat plates? Because I saw nothing in those regs that said
    rolls are not compliant.
That's funny. I have 2 bikes, and both of them have OEM flat holders
that are demonstrably useless at keeping the weather and road crap
out, and consequently at the end of every year, the rego label is only
barely legible and almost certainly illegal.

I'd go with the roll holders if I could be bothered fitting them.

  14. I've never seen the point of the round ones so the legality doent
bother me at all. They don't look any better or function any better
as far as I'm concerned. I prefer to use the flat metal ones, unlike
the plastic ones they don't shit themselves in the sun and have to be
replaced every year before they fall apart naturally. We bought two
bikes this year with round label holders, I've replaced them with flat
ones already. I have a spare round holder sitting here if someone
    wants it.

To stop the labels from shitting themselves due to water leaking in I
stick them inside a laminating pouch and laminate the label to seal
it. Pop that into a flat holder etc.

I've just picked up a Super Tenere 1200, spent half the morning
figuring out where to mount the label after I'd changed the plates
    over.

The flat metal ones are better at keeping the weather out and they also
tend to keep the label readable for longer but they also don't like
vibration much, they tend to crack at the metal tab and disappear.

Of course if you've got a smooth japanese 4 cylinder road bike that's
    probably not an issue.

Vibrating twin and single riders might have to look elsewhere...

  20. And I can also see some people who won't have the sticker as a constant
reminder to them that their rego was due last month. Oops
