The sticker contains information that the rego plate doesnt carry, such as VIN and engine number. The VIN and engine number can be compared to the numbers stamped on the engine and chassis to confirm that the sticker is affixed to the correct vehicle, and cross checked against the number plates to confirm that the plates are being displayed on the vehicle to which they belong. About here Theo will point out that they have phased out the rego label in WA. For the past year or so VicRoads stopped issuing rego labels for my car and it just has a generic label which contains no specific details related to my car except to say that it is currently registered and that label has no expiry date.
Nev, the Rego labels in WA used to have the expiry date and the plate number on that but they stopped that over 15 years ago. So the rego labels we had just said "WA, the month, and year", totally meaningless crap really. You could lift a current sticker from your granny's unused Morry Minor and put it on your Commodore when it expired. Theo
