legal/history question.

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Stan Blazejewski, Oct 21, 2004.

  1. A bunch of us were chatin' & the topic of these legal to ride with no
    rego/licence pocket/mini bikes came up.....

At what point in history did they become legal to ride these things
with no rego/licence or has it always been that way & I (and a lot of
mates) we suckered in by the cops into paying hefty fines for riding
minibikes (home made & commercial, all under 50cc) all those years ago
    when we were kids?

  2. Ok. I NSW at least, it's not under 50cc.

It's under 40cc, under 25km/h, and under (I think on this one), 1/2hp.

The ones with the whipper-snipper motors aren't legal, nor are all those
pocket bikes. If you want something like it that _is_ legal, go to your
local pushy shop and ask for a Pro-Rotary unit.

NSW wheeled toy device must be under150w per ton.

this is basiclly the electric ones only..

other whise its classed as a motorvehicle, that needs to be licenced,
registered and insured, since no adr, you cant get 2 of those..

  4. Some of the petrol jobbies (the ones that are attached to a pushy) are ok
    too.

Only if it doesn't have pedals IIRC - the rules for mopeds differ to
the rules without pedals - which is the big problem for the pocket
bikes - they've way too much power to come under the toy category, and
aren't ADR'd so no easy route for rego (you can rego without ADRs as a
special - but not easy), fir a set of pedals and they'd be totally
    legal :)

    JL
(I don't believe the law says they have to be useable - just
    functional.....)

if the motor is not designed for it, ie something thrown on afterwards, then
    its not a motorvehicle...

so putting a 1000cc motor on the back of your pushbike is legal...

Far be it from me to help the coppers get nutters on modded machinery
off the road, but actually there is a HP limit as to what the output of
any motor you strap onto a pushy can be

    JL
(but if I don't tell you what that limit is then you can to ignore it hey ?)
