I think the motor had to turn quite a bit faster though.

I've just remembered a car that a neighbour of mine once owned[1].
Instead of indicators it had a 'flag' on either side. And of course the
flags seemed to stick on a regular basis. Barmy, although I suppose
once upon a time they were all like that?

[1] Dunno what model, it was small and black.

I'm sure it's bad form to reply twice but I heard a story along those
    lines.

American astronaut "This pen was especially developed by NASA at the
cost of a million dollars to write in space"

Russian cosmonaut "We use a pencil"

I think I read it on the internet and nothing there is true any more so
it's probably an urban miff. I still think it sums up their attitudes
    nicely though.

Yep. "Trafficators", they were called. The cool ones had a little light
inside them to give a funky orange glow in the dark.

These neon boys don't know about the motahlighting tricks their grandads
    could teach them.
They all were. Black porridge, all the plebs cars were then.

I think we will go with trafficators but it was smaller than a Morris
    Minor.

I think that's likely. My own googling was leading that way as well. It
was definitely that sort of shape and I think it was 2 door. The
trafficators were level with the windows and just behind the doors.

Would have been the A30, then. The A35, as you can see, has indicators.

I have distinct memories of an A35.

One of my mates had a Speedwell tuned A35. When he bought it[1] we all
laughed like **** at it, until we discovered that it was faster and more
reliable than my '64 1071 Cooper S. I'd have him on the corners and
    brakes though.

    [1] For 100 quid IIRC.

It must have been an A30 then. To me it was just the funny little car
my next door neighbour used to drive. To you lot it seems to evoke
    memories of a bygone age.

No, it evokes memories of rusted, cold, unreliable, damp pieces of shit
that I used to drive when I was a skint teenager.

  17. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
I recall my old man flogging his outfit and buying an A30. We went on a
touring hol of Britain in it, two adults, two kids, full boot and a
    roofrack loaded to the gills.

    I recall being bored shitless for endless hours in the back seat;
    until...

Somewhere in Wales we tried to get up a long pass in the hills...
Top gear ran out of steam,,, change down... third gear ran out of
steam... change down, second gear ran out of steam... change down....
first gear ran out of steam... halted. Halfway up a fucking busy main
road with lorries trundling past us and blowing horns.

We had to reverse all the way down, since there was absolutely no way to
    turn the fucker round.

The next year we bought an.... A35... blistering power.

  19. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Istr some mad fuckers rallying one about 25 years ago. Heavily breathed
on 1275 lump and coilovers all round with decent clearance, Marina or
MGB brakes. The little fucker kept winning its class against some
    serious competition.

One of them would be a hoot with a decent twincam lump in it.

Since there are a bunch of knowledgeable people here, can anyone recommend
a suitable bulb/LED/whatever to make a number=plate light? The theory is
to make it - or possibly "them" - flush mounted in the tail unit.

(My Z1000 has a tail-tody thing, which looks good but it means that along
with the old rear mudguard the number plate mounting and light were lost.
Sooner or later I'll need to replace the light.)
