Learning in the snow

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Power Grainger, Jan 14, 2004.

  1. It's just started to snow (well, OK, sleet) here in Cambridge. And the
local bike training centres tend to use the cafe at the back of the
building I work in to stop off for a cuppa.

My heart goes out to anyone who's learning in this weather - esp if
they don't yet have a load of decent kit!

Still, at least they'll really get to enjoy their bikes once spring
starts to arrive. And they'll be prepared for anything the weather
    might throw at them!

  5. Looking south east out of my play room window, which is sort of your
way, it looks *very* black and I think it's coming my way.

  7. Yeah, but at least they a) tend to have the right kit and b) know what
they are doing when it gets slippery...you'd hope.

Too wet to be crisp, definitely not even.

You stick to your cliches and I'll tell it like it is.

I have been learning all manner of fun things. I can now pretty much
slide the front end of MZ wreck on demand in the wet. I'm now trying to
cope with when it does it undemanded [1].

    [MZ Wreck Update]
I have located a decent newish front Conti and an old /hard/ looking Mich
M38 rear from the depths of the lockup which brings the whole plot well
    under budget.

So much so I went mad and bought a new 24mm carb body for £25 [2]. The
other components I need (floats, slide, needle, bowl etc.) are a straight
    swap from the 22m one.

    [1] Damn you Avon Speedmaster
[2] Now at £77 all in for the Frankfurt runner, £80 if you include the
petrol its got in the tank.

So you reckon it'll get there and back then.

I've been totting up how much I've spent on mine and it works out at about
30 quid for plugs, points, clutch cable, oil and stuff. Still it cost me
£300 in the first place so it should be fairly sorted really. On the
downside I've found out it shares very few parts with the RD200.

I'm thinking about taking a couple of piston kits as well but it's a 40
    quid investment. Oh decisions, decisions.

Heh, I'm not saying ... I'll be putting some relevant mileage on it over
the next few weeks. Plan to hit it with 300 miles in one day to see if
    it throws up any problems.

With the Michelin tyre, plenty of tread, just the compound has gone hard
and may be a skittish but OTOH it may be alright. I'll swap the wheels
over later and run around on it. I''l have to repack those wheels'
bearings as I'm not fucking about with tyre levers.
I've sourced spare cables, points, condensers and the like from my spares
department under the bench. I may have a spare piston but I've got to
check whether it's std size one (I have mucho new O/S ones).

On investigation, i.e. reading the speedo properly, the bike has only
done 4500 miles which I reckon is genuine. 1980 registered, last taxed
May 1985 all the components and fasteners I've worked on have been in
    very good nick.
On probability it'll only burn one piston rather than both. You could
always punt them out on ebay to recover some of your costs if you don't
    need them?

Good idea, I plan on going to Rivington Barn[1] next Sunday cos it's been
years since I've been and it's about a 150 mile round trip, so should be a
nice shake down run for it.
Tyres are OK on the RS and I'm not planning on going over any Alpine passes
so not really fussed about grip too much.
Early 80's Yamaha fasteners seem to be made of some sort of cheese. I'll
deffo be bringing an impact driver with me.

[1] Anybody know if it's still going?
