I've been holding off on buying a bike preparatory to getting my learner's
permit, partly because I'm about to get married and have very little cash
but also partly because if Victoria is ditching the 260cc limit in favour of
    a power/weight limit in 2008 I'd rather have a ~400cc bike with a fatter
torque curve that'll happily manage freeway speeds than a 250cc screamer
even if it lacks top-end urge. A quick Google seems to indicate that this is
still all up in the air but a couple of newspaper articles I've seen lately
seem more certain. The VicRoads website wasn't helpful. Can anyone shed some
    light on this?

Hmmm.... if you want to wait until late October, (you may have more info
then about the direction VicRoads wants to go in as well) I might have a
2006 Suzuki GS500F for sale (well-loved, meticulously serviced,
learner-legal under power-to-weight ratio rules....) Heated grips, Ventura
Rack.... a mere 31000kms (by mid October maybe 34000) on the clock. One
"lady" <snigger> owner on P plates... 2 new tyres as of about a fortnight
ago. New chain and sprockets after Wintersun (in June).

That sounds great...probably nicer than the amount of money I was planning
to spend. The phrase "fixer-upper" will probably appear in there somewhere.
I'm not particularly scared by mechanical bits so I'll buy it before I need
it and take things from there.

ah you mean something bent that will never be perfect, and will also
never handle well again. good idea. that $100 you saved will always be
    worth it
