Leaky fork seals?

I've just come back from a mini-bimble. My right hand fork has a load
of white goo covering the back of it.

I made sure there was none on the other side on either of the forks so
its's just around the back of one.

I've not had any problems with dirty black rings on the forks at all
    which <http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcnuts/mcphotos/forkseal.jpg>
displays and many other online sites talk about.

The stuff on my bike is pure white oil in just one area. Am I right
in thinking this is a leaky fork seal, or has some bird shat on it?

Get excited about riding without falling off then?
    Sir dresses to the right?
Bit dark but you are right.....it's a ring

Now that'll be the "Lesser Spotted Low Flying Fork Awk"

Known in Southern parts to exist solely for the decoration of SOB fork legs.
Usually seen when it spots a parked bike and decides to take a low level
bombing run at it. Good job you have a fairing on the bike as they have been
known to actually miss and get the riders leathers right in the crotchpeice.
    Can be embarrassing IYSWIM.

If you are around this PM txt me and I'll bimble down and see if the Awk has
scored a direct hit and give sageworthy advice as to what to do.

White goo is probably an emulsion of rainwater and fork oil.
Better drain the oil immediately after a ride - if it is whitish
then you need to strip the forks and check for corrosion as well as
    changing the seals.

    <opens Haynes manual>

    ER models:

The forks on these models are not fitted with drain plugs. To change
the fork oil, the forks must be removed from the bike as described in
    Chapter 6, Section 6.

    <flicks to C6S6>

    1) Set the bike on its centerstand and support under engine to prevent
    the bike toppling forwards

    2) Remove the fuel tank (See Chapter 4)

    3) Remove the upper fairing (See Chapter 8)

    4) Unbolt the brake caliper and hang it with a piece of rope (See
    Chapter 7)

    5) Remove the wheel (See Chapter 7)

    6) Remove the front mudguard (See Chapter 8)

    7) Remove the handlebars, support them so the cables, wrires and brake
hose aren't strained or kinked (See Chapter 6 Section 5)

    8) **** that.

Top tip - when you get the dealer to do it, ask him also to drill and
tap a drain hole in the bottom of each leg and insert a suitably-sized
    drain bolt.

I've not seen a Jap bike made in the last fifteen years that had them.

Then again, I guess you've never owned a Jap bike made in the last
    fifteen years.

    Try this:

    1) Remove petrol tank.

    2) Remove caps on top of forks & pull out spacers/springs[1].

    3) Disconnect crank breather hose from airbox & plug end.

    4) Remove battery if it's not a sealed one.

    5) Turn bike upside down.

Given how much time your bike spends with its wheels in the air, I
    doubt it'll object.

P.S. This is a serious suggestion btw.

[1] You may have to remove the handlebars to do this.

Yes. When I changed the springs.
That's not the drain screw - that holds the damper rod in place.

A drain screw would be on the side.
    Oh, yeah. That'll be it.

    "pull out"?

"run across road to retrieve" seems more likely.

Get a picture of it. From what you say it doesn't sound like leaky fork
seals to me, probably accumulated road shit.

If they're leaking enough to worry about you'll know.

You must've undone some pretty tired forks in your time then, young
    Simon.

Bear in mind that the OP made no mention of taking weight off the
    forks beforehand.
