A contractor working for 6 months a year?

    Luxury.

You don't ever get invited to weddings or Christenings, or to Balls, or
to the races, or funerals, court appearances, or dates with women of
    breeding, or anything like that?

Yes [1] , no, no, no, yes [2], no, no.

    [1] My brightly coloured tie.
[2] One of my black ties [3]
[3] I seem to posess three ... how did that happen?

I must have about thirty ties I'd guess and prolly about 7 or 8 suits.
Course only four or five of the suits are really fit for me to wear
these days 'cos my waist is now a trim 31 or so inches rather than the
36 to 38 it was three or so years ago.

Still I like buying suits so that's ok. Prolly time I bought another
    really.

I actually still possess a number of suits, none of which I can now
wear for the exact opposite reasons to you. Maybe we could arrange a
    swap [1]

[1] Yes, even the three-piece, grey flannel, light check,,
double-breasted with bell-bottom turn-ups my old man had made for me
    for my sister's wedding [2]

[2] I was still technically a minor so I had limited say in the matter
    [3]

[3] The best man's suit was far, far worse.

There will be another. Only ever bought shirts and a jacket there.

Prices at Heathrow seem pretty good generally.

None of my suits properly fit me anymore (

I was amazed when I realised one of them had trousers of a 28 waist, and
before I changed jobs I could fit into it!

Well, that's your perogative of course, but why not come down and
check ovr the company accounts? You'll see then exactly how much me /
my company made over the last 12 months. That, I hope would satisfy
    you.

I think you are a little confused as to what I do as well. While I
*do* contract work, I am not a contractor in the sense that you seem
to think. My hourly rate is certainly nothing like most 'contractors'
    I've met.

I'm not sure that's strictly true. I'll see what he who knows says
when I actually buy another one for work.

She doesn't go to many funerals then. And the wig? Well that would be
    useful at fancy dress parties.

They are. However, even self-employed can't claim for clothes unless
they are necessary for their work.

Re bikes etc, IIRC if there's an element of private use then the user
is liable to tax on the benefit of that use, whatever the schedule
under which they're taxed. The IR will have someone for failing to
    declare such use.

To take it a step further, the IR has, IMHO of course, put together a
reasonably equitable set of rules and concessions, striking a balance
between employed and self-employed. At the general level of ukrm
earnings, if someone appears to be on a nice little earner then the
    chances are they shouldn't be!

Not strictly true, ask your company to give you a breakdown of your true
worth, ie what all those littel perks and schemes add upto. Include
holidays and potential sick time as well.

    Except
    a) you would spend it and therefore need to work the otehr 6 months
    b) not know where next job would be coming from , if ever , and work it
    just in case.

ITYF holidays and sick are budgeted for, so you needn't add anything
    on for those.
