Lawnmower engines

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Speedgazebo MOTP #1, May 8, 2011.

  1. Does anyone here have a mower with a 3.5 Biggs and Stratton engine
with a carb arrangement like this?

If so, can you take a look at the pictures I have uploaded so I can
check that I have got these throttle springs in the right place ? It
seems to be running very rich and hunting all over the place, one of
the springs was disconnected and it kept stalling.

    Thanks

That looks the same as my old Briggs and Stratton engined mower. That
developed a distinct hunting which couldn't be resolved so it now lives
at the side of the shed. I got pissed off trying to sort it so bought a
    mountfield.

  3. Not what I wanted to hear, but sort of what I suspected might be the
    final outcome.

  4. <Disappears round the back of the shed for 5 minutes.>

Nope, apparently not. I wonder when I threw that out?

I recognise it though and in answer to your unasked question, they all do
    that sir.

I've just put a new spring in mine, and I photographed them before I
took it apart to find the right place to return it. If I can find the
    pics I'll post them.

The lighter spring is an 'idle' spring (not that I've ever had it
idle) and the other one is the Govorner (spelling?) spring. It hooks
up somewhere to the bottom right of your picture. I downloaded the
    parts list.

I serviced my 2003 mower last week and it runs like new. No need to
    dump them.

Does this help? I know the top spring looks squashed up, but it runs
    perfectly like this.

  7. Mine does the same when you first start it up , after about 10
    minutes it runs fine

Try cleaning the filter out , make sure the area around the blades
are clean and the cowelings free of shit , any resistance will make
    them play up

These apparently need the diaphragm replacing every couple of years.
It's just the carb gaskets (but one is rubberised), and they're only a
couple of quid on eBay. I did mine over the winter, and it runs fine.
Also check the fuel is OK, stale fuel is also a symptom.

    In communiqué
Different to the two I have at 'the chateau', but similarly equipped
with springs all over the place. The lad managed to crock the Intek 60
version in the pikey Handy-Power ride-on mower last trip, again [1]. The
bugger won't rev up any more. TBF a totally blocked up air filter as a
result of a displaced cut grass cowling probably didn't help. He didn't
notice until smoke was rising from the cuttings accumulating where they
shouldn't. That's easily sorted, but the indirect (for want of a better
term) arrangement for opening the throttle butterfly seems to be fubar.
All done by governors and springs like the one in your photo it seems. I
jury-rigged it with a bit of bent fence wire, but once I fit a new
filter I'm not sure it will be safe. It seemed to be over-revving a bit
when testing on an open intake. Unfortunately I omitted to take a a note
of the exact engine number and it seems there are at least three
variants of spring according to this site:

    http://www.briggsbits.co.uk/

[1] A couple of years ago he violently yanked the throttle wide open
once too often and cracked air intake the cable was clamped too - still
it is a great help that he enjoys buzzing round the place on it hacking
    down the grass.
