Lathe motor repairs...

Ive managed to blow up the electric motor on a little lathe that has come
into my use...the motor blew because it hasnt been used for years and has
been kept in a damp and leaky garage..

Now, this is an old English lathe.... all imperial bolts and hex bolts
    etc...

Problem is, theres no name plate on it. And the electric motor has blown-
blue sparks, followed by smoke and lathe only turning at half speed.

Motor is connected to the relevant turny parts of lathe by pulleys, and thus
probably totally illegal by todays standards, but it does the job for me
    fine.

Question is, can I get this motor repaired/rewound etc, or should I just
look out for another motor that I can bolt on?...

Tonights job is un-gungeing the thing to see if I can find out a) who it was
made by and b) what sort of motor is is thats gone up in smoke...

?? What's illegal about powering a lathe via pulleys?
I'd hazard a guess that since it's hooked up via a pulley you have
fairly wide latitude in fitting a replacement motor. Match speeds
and get a motor of roughly similar hp rating and Bob's your mother's
    brother.

I've got a little lathe in my garage that's been waiting a good 10
years at least for a replacement motor, tuits aren't thick on the
    ground ATM.

A second hand motor is possibly the cheaper option but yes it can be
    rewound

IIRC Bonwick's company provided this service, I'm not sure if they
    still do.

  5. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Spike@Work"
Nothing illegal about pulley drive. Istr that you don't need guards if
you're using it privately; but you'd be daft not to.
Rewinding is a common enough job - Yellow Pages is your friend. Some
small motors can be repaired quite cheaply, and it'll save you having to
hunt down a replacement. Having said that, if you're lucky the motor
mounting might be a common type.

  6. There's lots of places re-wind alternators, and they do electric motors
as well, since they're exactly the same thing.
