Comments a week or so back suggested rather forcefully that a Varadero isn't
a good idea (though didn't really explain why) , but what else in a similar
style is worth a look? DL1000? Triumph Tiger? , Something else?

I fancy doing some touring with a passenger next year and something like
this would be better than my Hornet

Are you still working on a £3k budget as in your other post?

I rode one for a couple of days and found it dead confortable, but
really boring to ride. The excellent wind protection isolates you so
much that you don't feel like you're on a bike at all, then it won't
let you go over about 125 and makes you stop far too frequently for
    fuel.

Relatively, a TDM (often pronounced Tedium, but I loved mine) is much
more engaging and exciting to ride, although I've never tried the 900.
Wind protection not quite so good, but better range and performance
and no less of an off-road ability. Would definitely be on my list if
    I were in your position.

A Val Doonican just sort of feels too big (sounds silly) but, more
importantly, drinks like ukrm at a free bar. Expect 30mpg overall.

My mate Niall had one, and now has a 1000 V-Strom, which he loves.

    04/05 TDM900 [1]

There are two other bikes I'd put on the list. The R11xxGS and the Africa
Twin. For 3k you'll be looking at a W or X reg bike that probably has some
issues or a 10 year old one in good nick. For the money, I'd stick with the
    newer stuff.

[1] as Ace says, the 850 was a good bike. I found my mk2 version was
    excellent 2 up.

I'll sell you my '02 Triumph Tiger 955i after Mayday next year, for
about £2750 or so, if you can wait that long.

Yes. I can think of several people who've either done it or will be
    doing it soon.

What a complete load of codswallop

Mine topped out 2 up with full luggage at indicated 148. I was chasing a R1
and a R6 and they really weren't leaving me by much.

Wind protection is excellent and I get >240 miles/tank at usual quick
    motorway speeds and
over 150 at teh silly speeds that it is more than capable of.

If I was you I would go and have a proper test ride. I tried a Varadero, A
DL1000 a Tiger and I've also rode wessies GS. The GS was gutless, and tbh
I REALLY wanted to like it but preferred teh Vara in almost every area.
The DL was good and I maybe _just_ prefferred it to the Vara but SWMBO
didn't like it. Th Tiger was ergonomically not right for me and the triple
wasn't the sort of engine feel I was looking for. It was 'quick' but not
    that exciting.

Only you can decide which bike rocks your boat. Go and try them and pay
little to no heed of anything anyone else tells you as its you that will
    be living with it.

You need some Savlon for that ulcer.

BTW, have you sold it yet?
