Dying hard drive (weird noises or suspect disk activity).

Memory failure (run the built-in tests)

Temperature issues (find a utiliy that reports/logs temperatures of
various parts of the PC: CPU, GPU, Northbridge, motherboard, hard disk:
I use SpeedFan)(run self-tests after letting the PC heat up)

Malware (not Win7, the other one)

Have a look in the event viewer for anything that appears just before
the crashes happen. It may be a scheduled task causing it.

You mean there are people who don't have that as a bog standard boot option?

I seem to recall they have a reputation for overheating once they've been in
service for a few months, try running a vacuum cleaner gently around its
intakes and exhausts (ensure you cover the keyboard in some sort of webbing
to avoid losing the keys up the hoover ;)

My Aldi compressor came to the rescue yet again - blew copius
quantities of shite out of my pc which was over heating. Been perfect
    ever since.

I watched a bloke vacum carefully all round his PC only to never have
    it work again.

Big ginger bloke he was, proper hairy too :)

I watched a big hairy bloke vacuum fluff from my PSU - he got a couple
of diodes out of it too, and that certainly never worked again.
