Lap Timers

I could spend days combing the net but I'll just ask here instead.

Team UKRM could do with a lap timing system running a trigger unit on
the bike to a pit wall sensor. Would be particularly useful for the
24hr. This could be a stand alone unit or something involving a laptop.
Be nice to have the data straight into a DB or spreadsheet.
Suze had ID'd stuff running at around the £500 mark. Bit steep for the
team given other costs. Lot of the cheaper systems seem to be geared to
providing in-car data not for the pit crews. Anything more reasonable?

We don't need 10th's to be honest, the nearest half second is accurate
    enough.

I'm still developing this web-based lap 'analysis' tool. [1]
It won't solve your problem but I was wondering about updating it in
real-time and having it project likely finishing positions (based on mean
    lap-time achieved so far etc).
Whatever laptop I run it off would obviously need to be connected to the
interweb (too expensive?) or I'd need to build a local version (or install
    PHP, Apache & locally).
I don't propose automating the data (lap time) feed to my tool as I'd need
to be keying in all the other teams' laptimes in order for Team UKRM's data
    to have any real value.

Am retro-fitting a database (of teams, riders, circuits, races) at the
moment and offering team selection (for analysis) by machine class. Any
    other suggestions?

    'Hog composed the following;:
I race Radio Control model cars to European levels and we use AMB kit, which
is _extremely_ small, neat and very accurate. It is expensive though, and
needs a loop of wire under the track, so is mostly used by the club/race
    timekeeper ... http://www.amb-it.com/

However, as the main timing system can be broadcast on a wifi network,
anyone in the pits can also log on and get the exact same data set that the
race timekeeper gets. Maybe KRC have a similar setup, in which case all you
might need is a wifi equipped laptop and software.

http://www.conisystems.com/ also do a similar thing, though I haven't used
    their kit.

Failing that, I'd guess that an IR system would be better for trackside
timing, though I don't know of any reliable sets. They were certainly not
toogood when we first tried to computerise our racing, though that was many
    years ago now

  6. <stupid question>
Is there power available on the pitwall at places like Snetterton? 24
hours is a long time on one laptop battery. ...

No. Think garage, there is a 13A socket on the wall and that is about
    it.

    Indeed.

I said this video is a training exercise for me as much as anything
else. I now know I have two things to edit, the video *and* the
soundtrack and collecting them is two entirely different jobs.

Anybody got enough kit to set up as an independent sound crew?

You need a datalogger, you do. Logs lap times, where on the circuit
the riders are gaining time, where they're losing, all sorts.

I was going to suggest a Pi system but at > £1900 for the bike system,
    perhaps not.

Not a stupid question: well, I would say that, having already asked
it. The (partial) answer is that there is provision - a conduit runs
along the length of the pit wall, with double 13A sockets at frequent
    intervals.

The vital and as yet unanswered question is whether it works and
equally, whether it will be switched on. As the pit wall is less than
five years old, having been completely rebuilt at the behest of TOCA,
there's a reasonable chance of it working.

It would be nice to have power there for illuminating the lap time
board, when hung over the wall for the riders.

....no, no, it's no good I can't type it out loud[1].

*Anyway*... Small sister is keen to help with the timing, if not
required for marshalling duties. Is Cathy around for the 24-hour?

[1] But *no one* can stop me thinking it.

I don't know about accessing it but the bikes are fitted with a KRC
transponder for the official lap times. The laptimes are fed to the pit
garages and, so it appears, a simple portable TV can be hooked up to give
    realtime info.

Obviously this is just a TV display of times.

    Yes.

There are a number of twin socket weatherproofed outlets on the pit wall
at Snetterton. Not enough for one per team but with judicious use of 4
gang extensions there will be enough for lights and laptop charging.
