  4. I love the freedoms that the Coalition gives me. I love the freedom of not
having a union to make sure I get a fair deal from my boss. I love the
freedom of having to pay for my health and education, or going without if I
can't afford it. I love the freedom of being lied to by the government so
they can go to war against a country which never hurt us. I love the freedom
of having ASIO watch everyting I (and you) do. I love the freedom of living
in a country which flouts international law on the protection of asylum
seekers (while the government quietly implements whatever the WTO tells them
to, like the scrapping of Medicare). I love the freedom of an Australia
handed to the corporations on a silver platter (surely, McDonalds and Nike
know what's good for us). Oh, what joy to be free (as long as its your kind
    of freedom, that is).

  6. Hi Pete,

I work in a company with over 1,000 employees, and there is zero union
presence. My workload routinely requires long hours, yet there is no
overtime, and my salary is nothing special. With job scarcity and workplace
competitiveness in my profession, I have to bargain individually for a
raise. Collective bargaining would not only secure everyone a better deal
(pay, training, opportunities for career advancement), but ensure fair hours
(and therefore better health and life-work balance) for all, plus improved
    job security.

I think the case has to be very strong for making something compulsory (like
motorcycle helmets), but I would at least like to have a union to join if I
    wanted to.

    Cheers,
    Mark

Very few "Professions" have unions Mark, but if you feel that you are being
    ripped
off by your employer perhaps you should canvas your fellow professionals
and act as their representative in approaching your employer to discuss the
    matter.

Maybe the employees who are professionals don't belong to unions, but the
unions exist, even if Tony Abbott is trying to follow in Peter Reith's
    footsteps and outlaw them.

Of course, EMPLOYERS love their unions. There's the AMA (the doctor's
union - who threaten strikes more often than the Ships Painters & Doctors
used to), the MBA (the builders union), the local Chamber of Commerce (the
shop-keepers union), the Automobile Chamber of Commerce (the dodgy
    car-repairers union)?

All unions, all fiercely protective of their members against their workers.

I'll hunt out and post an article by the Australian Hotels Association (the
publicans union) arguing why their bar employees should have to breathe
tobacco smoke but their secretaries shouldn't. You'll have fun defending
    it, I'm sure.

Is the AMA still "no ticket no work" and do they still have that little
fiddle with the Feds to stop overseas trained doctors from immigrating
    here?

The Retailers Association represents shopkeepers the Chamber of Commerce is
a general Buisness association and hardly a Union.

You are really streaching it calling these a Union.
Defend the AHA I don't think so, I support the banning of smoking in all
pubs, clubs and restaurants inclusive of outdoor dining areas.

I also support random drug and alcohol testing of all politicians.

Lots of overseas doctors come here but they mostly want to settle in Sydney
& Melbourne, not in the regional and rural areas where they are needed.

For some time, you could *not* immigrate as a doctor, as the points
system was set so you couldn't get enough points.

And why aren't the Aussie doctors going out there hmm?

  14. How about random humanity testing, see if they're actually still human
    beings or just corporate drones.
