Anyone suggest some reasons why my bikes reluctant to start? It's been stood
idle for months now but i've thoroughly cleaned all the carbs (don't ask),
put a brand new battery in plus a set of spark plugs. It's taking about 50
kicks to get it running which is about as much fun as it sounds. My next
port of call is the points. I've had the cover off and they're not too
shitty although quite old now. Once the bike has decided to start it runs
sweetly so i'm fairly confident the carbs are reasonably well adjusted. What
    else can I try?

Try taking it to someone who has a clue, cos you obviously don't.
Setting up a 4 cylinder engine isn't that difficult, if you know what
you're doing, but it's easy to **** up if you don't. Diagnosing faults
like this is bad enough when you have the bike on the bench in front of
you, let alone trying to do it via a text medium such as this.

For the cost involved I'd replace the points and condensers anyway. Are you
sure the choke mechanism is working correctly?

    Why?

IMHO a decent set of points/condensor or a replacement with aftermarket
`lecky ignition is more important than a new battery or plugs!
You can clean/gap plugs and beg/borrow/jump start an old Kwack.

I`m not gonna preach and at least you`re giving it a shot.

    G`luck.

If it's been "standing for months" did you change the petrol?
Have you balanced the carbs after cleaning them? Clean or change the air
    filter?

  6. Bikes got fresh tank of petrol and new filter. The plugs were f**ked thats
why i changed them. The points look in reasonable condition but will clean
and set. And for the record Lazzo, you're absolutely right, i don't have a
clue how to set carbs up but in order to get the bike running enough to get
it to someone who does it'll help if i can start the fuckin thing wont it
which is why i asked the question in the first place shit for brains.
New condensor sounds cheap and promising option so thanks for the
constructive critisism. And dont friggin flame me if this reply appears in
the wrong place or slightly wrong format....i know as much about the
protocols of replying to newsgroup contributions as i do about balancing
    carbs.....

I don't spend my whole life keeping track of the newsgroup. I have other
things to keep me occupied, like learning more about how to repair bikes
and putting my skills to good use. Perhaps you'd benefit from the same
    thing.

You seem to have missed the point of my reply entirely, that being if
you haven't a clue then don't do it yourself, get someone who knows to
do it for you. The same thing could be applied to the way you format
newsgroup posts, because your attributions are missing and the post is
all over the place. There's a link in my .sig to the ukrmcbt which will
guide you through how to post the way it should be done. If you plan on
posting more to this group and taking advantage of the wealth of
knowledge that is ukrm, then I'd advise reading it. And just remember
who it was who advised you on how to get the carbs back onto your bike
in the first place, I do have my uses around here you know, as many will
    testify.
