The reason its so cheap [HardlyNormal has them on special for $388] is
because its in runout phase.Makes sense, it was released August 05' and
    its time is up.

Replaced today by S6500fd and looks like its a benchmark camera,
Fujifilm are good at making top/leading cameras, this is one of them.

Fingers-crossed they dont pump the price up to high. Will consider this
but shitty that the lens does no retract into the housing...

  4. That's a feature, not a bug. Retractable lenses and removable lenses
both risk dust on the CCD. In addition, you can't make a twist-grip lens
    retract (obviously).

I've got a 5600 and for me the only shitty thing is that the viewfinder
is a diopter rather than fully optical. Oh, and there's no provision for
a remote shutter release. OTH it cost less than $400; expect the 6500fd
to cost more than $500, which is a fair premium for a slightly wider
    wide-angle, a twist-zoom, 6.5Mp and face recognition technology.

  5. When a spelling error interferes with meaning, It's okay to point it
    out, isn't it?

    You bought it, huh?

What I want is a decent optical telephoto lens.
Digital "zoom" doesn't really do it for me.
Does the Olympus have a good lens?

Yeah I would've liked a proper SLR but I'm too cheap to pay the extra $500+
I would've preferred a twist zoom too. I hate wasting batteries doing
things less precisely than I could do them manually!

No mate, it is a known fact that when *our*[1] resident boys in blue
make a mistake - we tolerate it.

  9. Not really. It's not bad but it isn't a patch on the Fuji. If you want a
camera like the Olympus with an excellent lens, try the Sony Cyber-Shot:
the lenses are Carl Zeiss. There are several models, but you'll still be
    paying $400 - $500.

    hehe that's why i got the 7000 at a time when d-slr's started at $1500 I
could get what was all but a digi-slr (just couldn't change the lens but
has a bolt on zoom and wide angle) for under $800

i thought olympus and fuji came out of the same factory, with most of the
    same bits.

this camera has 3x optical zoom

  14. You might be right, but if you are neither of them are admitting it.
They may share the badging of memory cards but that isn't core business
for either of them. They certainly make their lenses in different factories.

In any event I wasn't trying to say Fuji make better products than
Olympus. What I was saying is that you can't compare a $200 camera with
a $400 camera, because nobody has a $200 advantage when it comes to
    lenses or CCD.

  17. Clem, mate, you really don't want an interchangeable lens on your
digital camera unless you plan on some very painstaking maintenance
and operation. A speck of dust on a frame of film is insignificant. A
speck of dust allowed to land on your much smaller CCD is disastrous,
and can be very hard to sort out. Wildlife photog mate who lugs his
new 11 megapixel machinery into the places where buses don't run
reports all sorts of dramas keeping dust out when he changes lenses.

The integrated lens in the Fuji wll serve you very well. Just whack a
skylight filter on the front and your lens cleaning probs are solved
    in an instant too.

well, it was a clearance item, was a $350 camera a few months ago..

personally i have a a330 fuji finepix camera, but as long as they both take
good photos, were by no means professionals who really cares, i think i got
    a good deal.

although i am surprized, if you dont use an olympus xd memory card, you cant
    use the panoramic feature!

coz ive got a few xd memory cards here with my camera.

I'm sure someone told me a few weeks ago that Fuji is to discontinue
manufacturing cameras. They are discounting most models in an effort
to clear stocks from resellers here in NZ. In view of that would you
    still recommend buying one?
