  1. Chilly, innit!

I just went out to pick up a new number plate[1] and some milk, didn't
do more than 50mph there or back and by Christ it's chilly.

[1] Which looks simply awesome, btw. If it was at any more of an angle,
    it'd be pointing upwards ;)

Woohoo.. It's lovely and fresh isn't it? Why are you sad, it doesn't
affect you in your fully fared four wheeled car does it?

I've just got back from a 30 mile bimble, and I can't feel my toes and
    fingers anymore.

    Oh yes.

I started to put the ER-5 back together at around 07:30 and by 09:00
was on my way to Halfrauds after clearning the chain with Parafin to
get some Swafeger (just an excuse to ride the bike really). Ruddy
cold, especially as I only had jeans, T-Shirt, gloves and helmet on. I
got home feeling like an ice lolly, even though I kept to the slow
    roads.

ER-5 appears to be cured of all illnesses. Will book it in next week
to have its choke, front brakes and restrictor cured.

Mind you I parked the well ventilated summer gloves today and dug out
the panthans, which were a bit too warm as it goes. Perhaps I need an
    autumn pair?

You're dead 'ard, you. Do you ever get anything caught up in them?
I can beat that, actually. Way back in 1993, I was at a *ahem* function
at Castle Donnington getting shitfaced and jumping around to a 250k
sound system where 2 (small) cartons of Ribena and two (small) bottles
of Evian were eight quid. Also, an ice pop[1] was a pound fifty.

[1] All the water had run out at this point AND they were fucking
    melted!

I have a 2001 ER5 in Melbourne, Australia and have long wondered if
it's restricted and how I could improve the front brakes.

Your "cure" - for the restriction. What does that involve?

Brakes - is it just that you are having new pads fitted or is there
actually some way of improving the very wooden feel my brakes have?

Mine is, strangely enough, running a set of IRC tyres which I always
thought were shite, but they grip and it handles like a dream....for
my sort of riding. I've taken it to NZ several times (Summer months)
and it's an absolute hoot over there on all the hilly twisty stuff.

    Kind regards

It involved me dropping it off at Cheriton Motorcycles and paying them
to remove the restrictor. It's an aftermarket restrictor (2 washers
in the carbs, IIRC) which they remove.

You will know if your ER-5 is restricted as it'll probably have a
restriction certificate. If you can't find one then you could always
frind someone else with an ER-5 or similar bike and see how zoomy it
is, or ask them to ride yours and give their opinion. It's only about
a 15 or 20bhp increase in power to have an ER-5 unrestricted, but one
    does notice it.

Just remember that ER-5 are supplied unrestricted so one has to go out
of their way to get it restricted.
I preferred the old feel to my brakes. I think they just need
something doing with them. They're getting done on Wednesday.
I've got a couple of BT45's and I like them. I will probably try a
couple of Avons next year just to compare.

    BGN says...
I rode an unrestricted ER-5 at the weekend that has Dunlop Sportmaxs
fitted, they felt ok in the dry, good enough to attack some bends in
confidence with some gusto. Left a Honda 750 for dead with it too. I'd
have gone a bit harder if I wasn't wearing cargo pants and a textile
jacket, and also if it was my own bike.

BGN emerged from their own little world to say
    Keep the BT45s.

My mate Tom has tried various tyres on his wife's ER5. Since he fitted
BT45s he's been using it for commuting himself.

I think the ER-5 comes with Dunlops as standard. I only had them on
for a couple of weeks when the bike was new before I replaced them. I
didn't know much about how the could/should/did feel like back then so
    I can't make a comparison.

I do wonder about this. It is one of those areas of biking where
product loyalty is nowhere near as good as it used to be. Now granted
that tyre technology is coming on in huge leaps and bounds and almost by
the minute but wouldn't we be inclined to notice that replacing a
perfectly good used tyre with a brand new version of the same thing,
which gives us back a centimetre of rubber and a whole new profile to
explore that we are a few thousand miles out of practice with, makes a
difference and aren't the results liable to be every bit as good as by
    going to another manufacturer?

Fair dos if you are coming from a Feng Sway to even something as
'ordinary' as a BT45 there is a marked difference but are the "same
thing" really that different from each other?

Hardly worth buying tyres at all really then.
