  5. Standby to bury your head in your hands... know how I knew to "guess" that
    it's a carburettor?

I remembered the bit in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in which the bad
guys buy a local sultan's favour with the gift of a "Rolls-Royce Silver
Phantom II... with Stromberg downdraught carburettors, can go from zero to
one hundred kilometres per hour in twelve point eight seconds." (numerical
values spelled out in order to convey the sultan's precise diction)...

See? Who needs history when you just have to pay attention to the movies...
in 20 years, kids will watch WarGames and know all about those old-timey
modems you used to have to stick a phone receiver onto...

A friend of mine was on Sale of the Century in the mid '90s. He won 3 nights
but bombed out on the 4th. Glenn Ridge asks him after a couple of wins...

"So, Clive, you're pretty knowledgeable. Do you read lots of books?"
"No Glenn, I watch lots of television".

The expression on Glenn Ridge's face was priceless :)
That was an acoustic coupler. You can still buy them, if using the internet
from public telephones is your thing.

  7. It usually is, isn't it?

But, seriously, what's there to be surprised about? Once appropriately
processed, all information is useful, come it from tv, film, print,
    whatever...

    Your friend's name is Clive?
Umm, nah... never actually had a Kevin Mitnick poster on my bedroom wall.

  9. Tut tut John, DCOEs downdraughts? IDAs maybe.

Didn't old Holdens have downdraught Strombergs?

  12. I know about them, but the old single downdraughts your everyday Holden
used, I'm sure they were Strombergs also. The dual barrel one used on the
    186S was too.

I think the double barrel one on the 186S was a rochester. I'm struggling to
remember what was on the early bog stock 186 and 179s

Strombergs. (And the hot 161 had 2 of them!!)
I've never seen sidedraught Strombergs (or downdraught Webbers!).
    I mustn't get out enough....

    X2!! Thank you Doug!
I wrote 161S and then back-spaced and then wracked my brain for a while and then
just gave up and wrote "hot 161".
    I didn't know there was a 186 X2 and I thought the 186S had triple downdraught Strombergs.

    downdraught Strombergs.

    That's the XU-1...The 186S had a two barrel carb, also a Stromberg if I
recall correctly. I had a couple of HRs and a HK munro 186S twenty or so
    years ago...

Didja know that 4-speed floor shift HRs with 186S engines were sold? Or that
a Yella Terra head turned them into XRGT beaters?...

I heard a rumour that there were 4-on-the-floor, front-disc-brake "production" EHs raced at Bathurst...
(But then; I'm a sucker for urban legends)

  19. But both exist, Stromberg made sidedraught constant depression carbs
something like SUs, but with a diaphragm. Used on 4 cylinder shitbox Toranas
and 3 of them on XU1s. Good for one thing, supplying cheap new diaphragms
for Bing carburettors on BMW boxers (motorcycle content)

Weber have made a few downdraughts, the 2 barrel used on some
cortinas/escorts for example, then the big performance one the John was
referring to the IDA, also a three barrel one of similar type (Ferraris
    etc).
But everyone knows them for the DCOE sidedraught.

  20. No, the Bathurst "special" EH was the EH S4, a 179 with manual transmission
(179s only came with auto initially), the trans had a heavier input bearing,
drum brakes with special linings, stronger wheels? (maybe, memories playing
tricks). Definately not 4 speed or disk brakes, that all came later with
the HR or poss the HD
