  1. Ah, that reminds me, on the GS550B I fitted a handlebar fairing
    and mounted the plate on an aluminium bracket inside the windscreen. Going
    up to the Oz GP at Bathurst from Adelaide one year, the bracket broke off
    (bent aluminium tends to be brittle at the bend, and vibration did the
    rest). As it gently slid off and onto the tank I managed to grab it and
    IIRC stuff it inside my leathers.

    Police presence was always heavy at Bathurst, even before the riots,
    so I wasn't surprised to be stopped, at dawn, a few miles out of town. As
    one cop inspected my papers, another walked around the bike. "Hey, where's
    your number-plate?" "It fell off a couple of miles back." "Oh, yeah, they
    all say that!" "Well, I managed to catch it..." Produced the plate and
    he grudgingly let me on my way.
