    Heh - yes.

Though had he ended up attached to my car it might well have added to
the list of things Plod would have wanted to talk to him about.

I guess that's the key thing, if you're going to have no number plate,
make sure you keep the plate at least somewhere on the bike in case you
happen to crash and need to suddenly find it :)

"Yes, we found your numberplate - the impact must have been so severe
that it ended up under the seat".

You're probably right - it seems bizarre that having no plate is less
of a crime than having an unreadable one. I was once stopped in
central London on my R65LS, which I had deliberately caused the
numberplate to be so dirty as to be unreadable (for the purpose of
being able to ride in bus lanes, rather than to avoid speeding fines).
The cop made me hand him the keys to the bike and wouldn't return them
until I'd cleaned the plate to his satisfaction.

This is in contrast to the bike cop who stopped me on the M4 on my R30
with no numberplate whatsoever, who just asked my details and which
cop shop I wanted to present my documents and a legal plate to (within
14 days, IIRC), and let me go on my way.

But if your plate falls off or breaks away while you are riding then one
can hardly be whacked for it? if it can be proved you have ridden for
days or frequently without said plate that is a very different matter.

    yes, yes, of course.

I was just obliquely suggesting that there's no point wasting time
with tiny/obscured plates - just take the fucker off and take your
    chances.

I had to "re-tune" the Quota's horns recently. I thought they were
Fiamms, but they're some make I've never heard of and can't quite
    remember - "<something>bell".

As a result of having recently ridden the Tuono, which has the horn
and indicator buttons reversed, I accidentally hit the Guzzi's horn
the other day. Bloody hel it was loud. It made everyone, especially
me, jump. Everyone, that is, apart from a drunk who was meandering
slowly across the mini-roundabout that I ws approaching. He merely
sort of flapped his hand at me and continued his inebriated amble.

No I agree completely, I was responding to (think) Champ above you. You
can't argue away a small plate.
The next level would be a legal plate tucked up under a hugger at an
angle that escapes Gatso and is difficult to read from a distance but
legible a couple of car lengths back.

You possibly couldn't argue away the whole hanger being missing though.

Not having a plate is one thing, but removing the entire structure it
would normally be attached to would, IWHT, be harder to explain away :)

Though I suppose the offence would still be no number plate.

well, genuinely, on my R30, the whole plate mounting assembly had
snapped off, rather than the plate itself having come off.

I assume snapping left evidence of this though, rather than some nice
    empty screw holes.

    Beware!
I had a doddering geriatric **** pull a fair imitation of an emergency
stop this week on the dual carriageway out to Bangor.
Offence: dawdling in my overtaking lane at 40mph
I had him on the inside, hitting the horns as I came level with his
nearside rear. I could see him almost snap his spine

Erm...never read the books and, even though I did watch the film once,
I can't remember anything about it - except Sting was in it with some
    big worms...

Just taken them out of the packaging and guess what?
They aren't copies - they've got FIAMM stamped all over them.

    Result!

My most commonly used means of giving audible warning of approach has
"Vance & Hines" stamped on it.

  20. I trust they come with a relay and their own high-capacity fuse
for that special "Look Ma, no voltage drop!" effect.
