Just passed my test and I am thinking of getting a used Kawasaki ZR-7 for
around the 2 grand mark (if I can find one).

Your thoughts on this bike much appreciated, particularly as I'm a newbie.

Thanks for that I will take a look at the SV650,

I suppose I should post a new message asking for recommendations for that
style of bike for two grand, all a bit of a maze at the moment.

    David Thomas :
Almost all of the commuter 500-650cc alternatives at that price would be better.

At 2K or less: Kawasaki GPZ500, Honda CB500, Suzuki GSF600 Bandit
At 2-3K: Yamaha Fazer 600, Suzuki SV650, Honda CB600 Hornet.
Outside choices if you don't mind a fairing are: Kawasaki ZZR600, Yamaha
    YZFR600 Thundercat.

Cheap, basic, and you'd be very lucky to find one for that sort of
cash. They're terribly dated. If you want a basic naked retro 750 the
earlier Kawasaki 750 Zephyr (same engine) is a far better buy. It's
actually a fun bike to ride.

For around 2k you're also looking at oldish Suzuki 600 Bandits -
similar performance to the ZR7 and now getting a bit long in the
tooth. Worthwhile if it's been looked after, and someone's taken the
trouble to uprate the suspension. Not worthwhile if it's been thrashed
to death and lobbed down the road - and many have.

What else? Hmmmm.... Yamaha 600 Diversion. The faired version is worth
considering. Again, basic and dated, but somehow rather worthier than
the ZR7. Avoid the unfaired one. You'll get quite a nice one for 2k.

Did anything come of the reports at the launch that almost every ZR-7 smoked
like a chimney by the end of the track day? Perhaps my mammeries are playing
    tricks...

Don't get it. I had one as a courtesy bike and it was awful. You'd be
    better off getting a 600Fazer, Bandit, SV650 or even a CB500.

I like the Bandit but the Fazer & SV650 seem to be a bit out of my price
range (2K tops), I also quite like the Zephyr & Virago 750's.

I have had a look round the dealers but its not the same as seeing the bikes
on the street, maybe it would be best to go to a bike meet and have a
squint, is there still a meet at the Dick Turpin (A127) on a Tuesday? and do
you still get a few bikes up for sale at the meets these days, long time
    since I've been to one.

I'd agree about the brakes seizing, and add that I've had more problems
with my Bandit than I could shake a stick at. Quite frankly, although I
like the Bandit 1200, I'll end up getting a Kwak, or Honda next time
because of the shit I've had with my one [1].
Heh.. atleast you're honest mate. :)

[1]Replaced cams / followers at 32,000 miles, suspension bearings,
steering bearings, sprocket carrier bearing, finnish crap on plastic.. and
    the list goes on.
