Glad to see members of this forum do actually have some interest in
bikes that could properly be regarded as classics, but sadly cannot
grasp the fact that most of the bikes listed on Ebay, are very poor
condition and have been tarted up for photos.

Buying from Ebay is not the same as from any other "private
source"..........many sellers on there are part time traders, who often
buy old shite tart it up, then list it on Ebay hoping for some
"clueless twat" to bid on the bike, and go through with the sale, as
they just dont know what they are looking at.............just like 95%
    of people posting on here!

Thing is nowadays there are a lot more people around with far more
money than sense................after all on this group TOG is felt to
    be an "expert"..............lol

How about, "Most bikes listed on Ebay are in very good condition and have
been photographed as-is." This assertion is just as valid as yours, given
that no one can prove either one either way. Unless, of course, you've
personally seen most bikes on Ebay. With all that traveling, how do you
    find time to post?

I would agree that most of the newer bikes (less than 4 yrs old) listed
on Ebay are pretty much ok. Thing is older bikes can be a minefield,
especially old Jap stuff................not really the sort of area for
clueless eggsuckers like TOG to get involved with!

TOG, at least, has credentials when it comes to buying, selling, and
evaluating old bikes. He's also contributed articles to motorcycle
magazines and is respected for his opinions outside this newsgroup. If you
have any sort of similar credentials to show your expertise, you won't
provide any. That makes you suspect.

You've already changed your tune about most bikes on Ebay being in poor
shape and now want to assert that it's only Japanese bikes over 4
years-old. In other words, you can't back up your statements and instead
revert to weenie-waffling. FFS, man, when I directly contradict you, don't
backpedal and tell me you agree with me! Tell me why I'm wrong and why
    you're right!

Being an expert requires a little backbone and firmness of conviction--not
to mention credentials--and not just saying that everyone else is wrong. If
you can't understand that and can't react accordingly, then you're just
another mealie-mouthed little whiner who got his butt spanked and is only
sticking around because he likes getting his arse whacked.

You seem to have an opinion of what's a classic motorcycle; let's hear that
opinion. Until then, bend over; I'll drive.

If you feel that writing for the motorcycle press automatically makes
you some sort of expert, then it would appear you are in tune with the
TOG school of egg sucking, rather than being able to look at anything
    objectively.

In general I would hold that I was quite correct to state that the
majority of older bikes on Ebay, can be minefields, meaning a great
deal of aggravation and sometimes spending more than double the
purchase price to get in any sort of rideable order.

The thing to be remembered here, is that unless you can afford to throw
away the money you spend on any older bike, that it is extremely unwise
to take the advise of pompous twits like TOG in regard to buying
anything like this. This sort of thing really is the province of people
who do have genuine knowledge of these machines, unless as I say you
can afford to lose the money!

I think 'respected' is a bit strong. Acknowledged is probably better.

Having been working with motorcycles for more than 30 years, I am
perhaps rather better qualified to offer informed advice, than a
pompous "Google Gary" who knows little more than how to switch on his
PC and connect to the net.................

Idiots such as TOG are not "respected" away from here, they are laughed
at, and are generally the source of some nice little earners, for
anyone in the trade wanting to offload some old shite!

Firstly it may be worthy of note to understand that I do not use bad
language, and have not wrongfully accused anyone of sexual depravity.
The fact that TOG is a cluless idiot, is demonstrated by each and every
one of his posts............one wonders if he could rebuild a spoked
wheel accurately, or repair an aluminuim casting..............I think
    perhaps not!

  12. I bought my SOHC CB750, CB550, CB125, Z200 and possibly a few more I
can't remember, from Ebay, and they were all good bikes. The CB550 was
    *very* good[1]. The CB125 was/is a corker.[2]

I'd agree that there are sharks patrolling the Ebay waters, but like you
say, no more than you find in any other selling medium. And the great
advantage of Ebay is that you can usually check from the photos whether
something is worth bidding on. And if it isn't as described (like a
smokey misfiring ruin, instead of a 'sweet little runner'), then you can
    walk away.

I've lost count of the numbers of used bikes I've gone to see, having
trawled paper classified ads, only to be confronted by a complete POS
that I haven't even bothered starting up.

[1] It had the crummiest picture I've ever seen on Ebay, but from what I
could discern, it looked pukka. I downloaded the pic and opened it up in
Photoshop, improving the brightness, contrast etc, and thought: "Bloody
hell, that's good!" And it was.

[2] Reminds me - I must take some pix of it today, while the sun is
    shining.

    SNIP!
You are REALLY full of crap aren't you? Go and google yourself and see how
often you use words such as shit, prick, fucking, fuckwit etc. You are more
foulmouthed than many others who post on usenet.
However, YOU have been rightfully identified as a perv...

So, Chris the welder .... either get back under your stone you trolling
little perv OR start posting something other than childish, inane sniping at
others. Or, of course, you could go back to pestering the freemasons.

  16. Well, I would be, if my <cough> dodgy sexual preferences were plastered
across the interwebthingy, for anyone to read.

I wonder if there's a local newgroup for Portsmouth and the Hampshire
region, where they might usefully be posted. It'd be doing him a favour,
after all, seeing as he's trying to 'make contact'.

If you feel that calling someone a "prick" is comparable in any way to
what I have been called here, then it seems I am quite correct about
    you.
