kaw. super sherpa no odometer & speedometer

Just bought a used Super Sherpa 2002 with "no mileage" on it. The
odometer reads 0 km and the speedometer does not indicates speed when I
ride the bike. While the bike is in mint conditions, (It really
looks as if it had not been ridden 100 miles), it looks as if the
odometer is either defective or was purposely put out of order.

I checked the pulses out of the pick up coil and there are none,at
least using a voltmeter. I could put a scope on it, but I thought
that some one out there could provide me with some hints as to what
the problem might be.

I tried to remove the front wheel to have a closer look at the pick
up coil, but I can't even get that far. The pick up coil is stuck on
the axle preventing me from unscrewing the axle without damaging the
pick up cable.

I have ordered a shop manual but it will be weeks before I receive
it.

CAn anyone throw some lights on the subject?
