Katana raw gas smell

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Douglas Moffitt, Sep 24, 2004.

  1. I'm pretty new to the bike world, but here goes...

    I have a 2000 GSX750F. Bought it used about 3 months ago, with 2700
miles on the clock and have doubled that very happily. I'm having a
    blast!!

    , but...

Whenever I shut it down, there is a strong smell of raw gas. The guys
at the shop where I bought it mumbled something about "perfectly
normal, the tank is vented...". however, the smell seems to eminate
from the front, around the steering, not down where I believe the tank
vent tube to terminate, under the rear brake pedal. There is no
evidence of gas dripping on the floor, and performance is, as far as I
know, normal. I have not stripped the fairings, but would like to
know as much as possible before I start.

    Is this, in fact, normal?

If not, are there any prime suspects on this model?

    Thanks for any advice.
