Karuah River Rally

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Alan Pennykid, Jan 30, 2006.

  1. Is on very soon, 10th-12th February at the usual spot; Frying Pan Creek
campsite in the Chichester State Forest near Dungog (the NSW Dungog). It's
a simple basic rally, the main aim is just to camp with a bunch of fellow
motorcycle lunatics, sit around a campfire or under a tarp and just relax.
There is some basic catering on site (sausage sandwiches and softdrinks),
anything else you'll have to buy in town. The price this year is $20
including badge, camping, some firewood (while it lasts). Bring your
swimmers, there are a couple of waterholes to enjoy, bring your raincoat and
a hat, it can rain. We have awards for long distance, youngest rallyist,
hard luck, club effort (distance from the club base X number of members in
attendance) etc, very nice trophies this year.

Aus.moto have mostly had a good rollup to this event the last few years, I'd
like to see a few of your faces again this year. Any bike welcome, cars not
welcome (injured riders excepted etc. Gnat, you're welcome to drive down ;)

I'll be heading up on Friday 10th from the lower Blue Mountains/Penrith area
riding via the Putty Rd, Singleton, Gresford, Dungog. It's a nice ride, if
anyone would like to join me, just get in touch.

I am very UNLIKELY to make it this year but I heartily recommend this rally
    for any novices.
(and you can win a prize if you're a rally-virgin!)
You'd better learn to squint when Al comes around in his kilt though!

Im gunna try my damndest, and maybe a mate as well - have heard somthing
about a dirt road to this place and a "good" and "bad" way to get in??
If this is so - whats the good way to get there on a sportsbike? Perhaps I
can win the rally virgin prize :)

Al sounds pretty game wearing a skirt when theres prolly gunna be alot of
    bikers wearing beer goggles

    Cheers

There are two ways to get in, one (allegedly) involves a water
crossing, I went the other way. AFAIK, they're both dirt, but
it's no biggie. I got in and out on my YZF1000 last year with no
particular dramas. It was wet, so I ended up with lots of mud
all over my bike (I didn't wash it off for months - I'm no
    bitumen-bound fair-weather ducati-riding poof!).

Perhaps you can win the virgin prize :)

Um, so which way actually didnt involve a water crossing?

    AFAIK, they're both dirt, but
Yammy rider like yourself - Would definatly rather be riding it then
    spending time washing it also.

I tell all the girls Im a virgin - Dont tell me nobody else has tried this
    approach :b

I would've thought the leaches would be the main problem for a kilt-wearer
    but maybe that's the ATTRACTION!
The way in from the Dungog-Stroud Road road (the town is called "Stroud
Road") is generally considered to be the less gruelling road but there's
    not a lot in it!
If you're coming up through Maitland (far preferable to Raymond
Tce/Buckett's Way) to Dungog you just kinda keep going towards Stroud Road
(Gloucester) and then turn left about 5km out of Dungog and look for the
    signs.
(Or just follow any BMW you see heading north out of Sydney... but try to
pick a heavyweight. Some of the F650s and GSs go pretty quick when they
    get to the dirt!)

The other way that they're talking about is only from Dungog and it's not
    that bad.
There was a 6" water-crossing one year I was there but I think it was dry
    the other two times.

  19. Yep two ways in, referred to by some as the top road and the bottom road. I
only ever use one of the roads (cause I still don't know how to find the
other one, stuck in my ways) and it's the one with the water crossing; it's
nothing really just a concrete causeway with some water running over it,
never had a problem with it no matter what bike I was riding. The road
surface varies a bit year to year depending on how much the dirt has eroded
away, exposing more rocks. Then you'll hear one person describe it as crap
and another as smooth, so who knows. Both roads are maintained by the
forestry and are mostly kept as good as they can be. If you get to Dungog
and dont know where you have to go, just head to the Bank Hotel and ask the
publican, he's got maps. And no need to rush, you'll get there.

Was a damp ride out last year, wasn't it?

No but you're the measure of thunderarses, hence thunderarse poofs is
    presumably a subset thereof
