You wouldn't think they'd allow fully loaded panniers and a pillion in a
    club race, would you?

Heh. ATM, the police are really cracking down on speeding. The
government has got a bee in thier bonnet about this. One of the lads in
the office got done twice in one week in two different places.

This is really good, this site:

I know you lot in the UK won't give a toss, but even so...

X-rays, x-rays, get your x-rays here. Form an orderly queue outside my
    house. Very reasonable prices.

You would need special ultrasonic probes for aluminium, due to the
difference in material sound velocity. It also seems to be quite thin to
    be doing ultrasonics on.

Porosity isn't such a serious defect as long as there isn't too much of
it. The lack of penetration wouldn't be such an issue as long as there
is sufficient weld material to cover the joint.
The more worrying thing is that there seems to be no fusion in some
places eg. second photo, right bottom edge.

Worrying but I think hell will freeze over before a manufacturer makes
a recall on the basis of a race track incident.

There's a big thread on gixxer.com about it and the owners of the bike
apparently neglect to mention that it went head on into a wall.
Certainly enough to justify a snapped frame but not the shite welding
    it exposed.

I think I'll just settle for being extra careful when landing the
    front wheel )

It's an obsession with welds which look nice rather than penetrate
effectively. Utterly appaling and exceedingly dangerous.

    I do though!!

Especially given that I'm intending on carrying out a high-speed dash from
Calais to Cahors next Monday evening.... Arrive Calais at 7pm. Only
800-odd km toCahors so should get there at around 1am-ish......

PS. Le Mans was very very wet...

I'm at the 'needing extra money' stage...

No more major problems, but the things tht have gone awry + the time I have
had to spend over there (another 2 week visit as of next week) means it's
cost around E25,000 over what we thought and I've lost around £12k in
    earnings from not being here...

    Swings and roundabouts.
A weld doesn't necessarily have to be fully penetrated to be "full
strength". Depends on the joint design.
A weld with a poor profile (eg. sharp undercut), can be more dangerous
    and liable to fail.

The photos would indicate that in this case it was badly underdone. As MB
says, there appears to be *no fusion* in some places. A slight undercut is
unsightly, but but in a joint where the forces are primarily longitudinal
it's preferable to *no fusion* I'd say.

Though as mentioned elsewhere, crashing it into a wall really probably
    didn't help...

He hit the wall because the steering went all funny when the joint failed.

The impact with the wall didn't magically transform the crapness of the
original joint. It just exposed it.

Do you understand what *no fusion* means?

But if you're flashed, it's not a problem for you, is it? It's only
plod you need to worry about. Unfortunately the site above doesn't give
clues to mobile units. I'd like to find a site that does though. I'm
sure that there must be one that exists?
Err, 6 hours? I'd say more like 8 from Calais. In the cage?
I've been meaning to drop you an email actually. Sorry, but I forgot.

It was pretty miserable though, wasn't it? Sleep in the cage, did you?

Can you weld fresh air to a lamppost?
