Some words related to "contribute": aid, help, assist; add (to), augment,
    supplement; fortify, recruit, reinforce, strengthen

Now if any failure of the helmet added to the events that led to the
injuries, then the helmet did contribute through it's failure.

But as I've said before, the real question is what *exactly* regarding the
    helmet contributed?
There have been cases in past years (sorry, can't come up with exact
references. I think they were in Seppo land) where people have been found
guilty of contributing to someone's injuries and even death through their
own inaction. Usually in cases of gang rapes or bashings where some people
have just stood and watched. Even some of their "egging on" has contributed
to the decision of the person(s) that carried out the attack.

Say a 17yo kid with no licence steals his dads car, takes some mates for a
    joyride and crashes the car.

    Should his punishment be...

    a) a $1000 fine
    b) ban from driving, fine and good behaviour bond
    c) a two year sentence in a juvenile detention centre

Well, if I was being employed by him as a bodyguard, and I just looked the
other way as soon as the hoons started on him, then yes, I would say that my
tacit approval had contributed to his injuries.

    this is relevant to.....?

I would reject that characterisation out of hand. The actions of the
protestors are only akin to those of a lynch mob when they actually
act to impose their own punishment of the offender. Until that
moment, they are doing nothing more than expressing their democratic
right to disagree with the actions of an arm of government (in this
    case, the judiciary).
Nevertheless, protest is legal and protected, while lynching is not.
Maybe so. However, there is a big difference between putting out the
wrong message and stringing up an (alleged) lawbreaker.
On its own, maybe not, but motorcyclists are far from alone in
protesting what they perceive as inadequate sentencing decisions.

  11. I don't see why the cyclists attempt to avoid colliding with the cage
in any way ameliorates the drivers responsibility for what happened.

  12. I think it's unfair to characterise the calls of what you refer to as
the "lynch mob" as requiring the death penalty. They characterise a
$500 fine as inadequate given the consequenses of his negligence.
Whether you or I agree with the adequacy of punishment here, no one
has suggested the death penalty as appropriate for this offence,
    merely that $500 is inadequate.

Put in those terms, It's a far from unreasonable statement even if
other reasonable people might disagree with it for perfectly valid
    reasons.

I agree with you regarding the punishment for this offence, but I do
not share your characterisation of those who dislike the outcome as a
lynch mob or even as unreasonable.

er, character? Intent I'll agree with, but character? Or are you
referring more to criminal record here?

So you reckon the Judge meant "The helmet failed to protect him and in fact it failed to protect him" do you?
That's what you're saying. (And the real question is "why do you keep on saying it"?)
    ~
So there may have been cases somewhere where it might have happened and because of that you're sure that I'm
    wrong?
    You're on drugs!
Why don't you just say "I was wrong" and we can forget all this stupidity?
