has anybody figured out an easy way to remove and replace the clip on
a master link? it's always such a pain in the ass

  2. I've never had a problem. Get a pair of snub-nosed pliers. Place one jaw
against the link pin, and the other against the open end of the clip, so
    that it touches both ends.

IYSWIM, you are holding the pliers parallel to the ground, jaws against
    the sideplates.

Then squeeze. Off pops the clip.

Depending upon the clip design, I will insert the front pin in the slot
with the clip at 90 degrees to the link and slid the clip all the way to
the base. Then pivot the clip until the other end gets to the second pin
and use a small blade screw driver to lift the leading edge of the clip
over the pin. The trailing edge hooks on the second pin and a little
more pressure on the leading edge will allow it to snap down over the
pin. That way it's spreeding the clip less. Of is just pushing the open
end with a pair of needle nose and I never reuse a clip.

hmmm, I'll try it that way. I've always used a flat bladed screwdriver
to separate the end and then used my other hand to slide it. Of course
it keeps popping closed so it's not very effective.

A good reason to go with a riveted link.
